Josh Hartnett takes on a dangerous battle beneath the waters of Newfoundland in Below, a six-episode horror-thriller series premiering October 8 on Netflix.
Created by Jesse McKeown, the series follows Calvin Penney (Hartnett), a big-hearted but stubborn fisherman in a small Newfoundland community whose life is upended when an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing the town. Haunted by his father’s mysterious death and determined to protect his family, Calvin teams up with marine researcher Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) to uncover the secrets surrounding the creature and the community’s past.
Charlie Heaton stars as Calvin’s son, Wade, who begins experiencing disturbing symptoms as strange events escalate around the town. The cast also includes Willow Kean as Ruth Penney, Ruby Stokes as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell as Jay Penney, and Kaleb Horn as Noah.
Set against the rugged coastal landscape of Newfoundland, Below combines local myth, suspense, dark humor, and family drama while exploring themes of family, community, resilience, and a way of life facing change.
The series was filmed on location in Newfoundland, with the production team embracing the region’s landscapes and culture. Hartnett and Heaton also immersed themselves in the local community to better understand the people, history, and distinct dialect of the province.
McKeown, who has visited Newfoundland for many years, drew inspiration from the province’s isolated coastal communities and unique character. The series brings this setting into a supernatural story where residents must confront an unknown threat while fighting to preserve their community.
The series is written by Karen Walton, Perry Chafe, and Natty Zavitz, with Jamie Childs, Helen Shaver, and Stephen Dunn directing the episodes. Executive producers include McKeown, Jessica Rhoades, Chris Hatcher, Hartnett, Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall.
