Twenty-nine junior high school science master teachers from across the Philippines have completed the third year of Security Bank Foundation’s (SBFI) Mentoring Future Leaders for Nation-Building Program for Science Teachers, strengthening their ability to use science research to address community needs.
Held at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas, the training focused on community-based research and stakeholder engagement. Participants learned to develop and implement projects that respond to local challenges while building partnerships with parents, local government units, and other community stakeholders.
The teachers presented proposed initiatives covering environmental sustainability, livelihood development, and health education, demonstrating how science can be applied beyond the classroom to create practical solutions for their communities.
“The most meaningful learning happens when science is connected to people’s lives,” said Rafael Simpao Jr., chairman of Security Bank Foundation. He added that helping teachers better understand their communities enables them to develop relevant, practical, and sustainable solutions.
The training builds on improvements already seen in participating schools, including enhanced science laboratories, stronger teacher mentoring, and better student learning outcomes. As teachers begin implementing their community-based research projects, they will receive continued guidance through online coaching and learning sessions.
Simpao also emphasized the importance of understanding people’s aspirations, challenges, and values in developing initiatives that create meaningful impact.
The program will culminate in 2027, when participants present their project results and demonstrate how science-based interventions have contributed to learning outcomes, teacher leadership, and community resilience.
The Mentoring Future Leaders for Nation-Building Program for Science Teachers is a multi-year initiative of Security Bank Foundation in partnership with De La Salle University. It aims to strengthen science education and develop teacher-leaders who can drive positive change beyond the classroom.
