The infamous tale of Lizzie Borden returns to captivate audiences as Netflix unveils the fourth installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s acclaimed anthology series, “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story,” premiering on September 17.
Inspired by one of America’s most enduring true crime mysteries, the new season revisits the story of Lizzie Borden, who was accused of the brutal 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Massachusetts. Though she was ultimately acquitted, the case has remained one of the country’s most debated and legendary murder trials, immortalized by the well-known nursery rhyme associated with her name.
Leading the series is Ella Beatty, who takes on the role of Lizzie Borden after previously appearing in Feud: Capote vs. The Swans and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. She is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden, Lizzie’s stepmother; Charlie Hunnam as her father Andrew Borden; Vicky Krieps as Bridget Sullivan, the Bordens’ live-in maid; Billie Lourd as Lizzie’s older sister Emma; and Jessica Barden as actress Nance O’Neil.
Set against the backdrop of a wealthy yet deeply troubled New England household, the series follows Lizzie and Bridget as they navigate a home marked by repression, cruelty, and emotional turmoil. As fantasy and reality begin to blur, a series of gruesome unsolved murders forever changes public perceptions of female killers, turning Lizzie Borden into one of history’s most controversial figures.
The upcoming season marks the first time the Monster anthology centers on a female subject, continuing the franchise’s exploration of notorious true crime stories through Murphy and Brennan’s signature dramatic storytelling.
The anthology debuted with “DAHMER – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which became one of Netflix’s biggest television hits, surpassing one billion viewing hours in its first 60 days and earning multiple Emmy Award nominations. It was followed by “Monsters: The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story,” chronicling the infamous Menendez brothers case, and “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” which explored the life of the serial killer whose crimes inspired classics such as Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs.
“Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” premieres exclusively on Netflix on September 17.
