Netflix is bringing a music-driven story of ambition and perseverance to the screen with Tantara, a new series starring Song Hye-kyo, Gong Yoo, Kim Seol-hyun, and Cha Seung-won. The series reunites acclaimed screenwriter Noh Hee-gyoung, known for Our Blues and It’s Okay, That’s Love, with director Lee Yoon-jung of The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince.
Set against the gritty Korean entertainment industry of the 1960s through the 1980s, Tantara follows individuals who rise from humble beginnings and pursue their dreams of success despite poverty, hardship, and overwhelming odds.
Song Hye-kyo stars as Min-ja, who enters the music business after enduring an impoverished childhood and taking on various jobs to survive. Determined to build a better future, she fights to make her ambitions a reality with the help of her childhood friend Dong-gu, played by Gong Yoo, who stands by her side as they navigate the challenges of the industry.
Their journey brings them to Min-hui, portrayed by Kim Seol-hyun, a bold and talented singer with a captivating voice who becomes their first artist. They also encounter Seok Gil-yeo, played by Cha Seung-won, a celebrated hitmaker whose musical expertise can transform aspiring performers into superstars.
Together, the four characters embark on a journey through an unforgiving industry, driven by their desire to achieve success and leave their mark. Through their struggles, Tantara explores the sacrifices, determination, and relationships behind the pursuit of fame in a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape.
The series’ release-date announcement artwork offers a glimpse into this music-filled world, using a turntable as the centerpiece of a vibrant panorama of the characters’ lives. It highlights Min-ja and Dong-gu’s beginnings as nightclub staff before becoming rookie talent managers, alongside Min-hui’s passionate performances and Seok Gil-yeo’s musical prowess on the saxophone.
With its period setting, acclaimed creative team, and ensemble cast, Tantara promises an intimate look at the dreamers and risk-takers who helped shape the entertainment industry during a transformative era.
Tantara premieres December 11, exclusively on Netflix.
