Netflix has greenlit Outback (Working Title), a new mystery noir series starring Ryu Jun-yeol, Hong Kyung, HOYEON, Won Ji-an, and Justin H. Min.
The series follows Zion, who travels to Australia after receiving the devastating news of his sister’s sudden death. In an unfamiliar city, he is confronted by unsettling questions surrounding her death, sending him on an increasingly obsessive search for the truth.
Based on the popular webtoon G’Day, Outback reimagines the original story for the screen, expanding its characters, backstories, and relationships while retaining the dark and mysterious tension of the source material.
Han Jun-hee, known for D.P. and the Weak Hero franchise, serves as executive producer and creator. He said the series aims to take advantage of television’s ability to explore the characters and their relationships in greater depth.
“We wanted to use the unique strengths of the television medium to delve deeper into the characters’ emotions and dynamic relationships,” Han said. “Beyond the thrills of uncovering a mystery, we aimed to capture the fragile vulnerabilities, inner conflicts, and growth of youth caught in the crossfire.”
Jeon Du-gwan, who directed D.P. Season 2 and Seen: A Bizarre Story, will direct the series. The screenplay is written by Park Hyun-woo, writer of Weak Hero Class 2, and Han Jun-hee.
The newly announced ensemble cast brings together Korean and international talents.
Ryu Jun-yeol (Revelations, The 8 Show, The Owl, Believer) stars as Han Minhyuk, a mysterious man at the center of the investigation.
Hong Kyung (Good News, Hear Me: Our Summer, Weak Hero Class 1) plays Zion, whose search for answers about his sister’s death gradually turns into an obsession as he follows the traces she left behind.
HOYEON (Squid Game, Hope) portrays Smiley, an unpredictable livestream creator whose presence adds another layer of tension to the unfolding mystery.
Won Ji-an (D.P., Made in Korea) takes on the role of Si-young, Zion’s sister whose death sets the story in motion and becomes the source of the series’ emotional and mysterious undercurrents.
Justin H. Min (The Umbrella Academy, BEEF, After Yang) joins the cast as Scott, a Korean-Australian police officer who brings additional tension and energy to the investigation.
With its ensemble cast, complex character dynamics, and unfamiliar Australian setting, Outback promises a mystery noir story that explores obsession, loss, and the search for truth.
Outback (Working Title) will be available exclusively on Netflix.
