Transitioning to serious dramatic acting can be a formidable challenge. However, actress Ashley Lopez has proven that she is ready for this pivotal moment in her career.

Lopez recently completed The Masters Series: FDCP Acting Workshop for Filipino Talents 2026, an intensive ten-day program hosted by the Film Development Council of the Philippines.

Designed to elevate the skills of both stage and screen performers, the workshop focuses on character building, vocal mastery, and dissecting a director’s vision. For Lopez, who had been seeking professional training since last year, the experience marked a major turning point in her artistic journey. Securing a slot in the program gave her the creative breakthrough she needed.

“I am incredibly thankful to the FDCP for giving me a chance, even though I come from VMX,” Lopez shared, reflecting on her background. “I learned so much from Day 1 to Day 10. Since this was my very first formal workshop, I can genuinely say I’ve seen my own improvement.”

The environment initially brought a wave of performance anxiety, given the presence of seasoned theater actors among the participants. However, the initial intimidation dissolved into camaraderie. Lopez recalled her peers as “genuinely kind people” who made the collaborative space deeply meaningful.

The workshop offered Lopez direct access to some of Philippine cinema’s most revered figures, including directors Laurice Guillen, Joel Lamangan, and Jose Javier “Direk Joey” Reyes, as well as acting coach Ana Guillen Feleo and cinematographer Lee Briones. Each mentor brought a unique layer of expertise to her development.

Under the guidance of Direk Laurice and Ms. Feleo, Lopez worked on emotional regulation. “They taught me how to manage my emotions,” she explained. “They likened my initial approach to diving into a pool so deep that I struggled to resurface. They helped me find that balance.”

Meanwhile, Direk Joey provided both tough love and vital encouragement. Lopez recalled him noting the visible growth in her choices during the sessions compared to her past film work, leaving her with a memorable piece of advice, “You deserve better, you deserve a bigger role.”

Finally, Direk Joel introduced intricate acting techniques that reframed her understanding of the craft. While she had utilized similar instincts before, the workshop deepened her comprehension of “why” and “how” those techniques work onscreen.

The actress also expressed gratitude to Ms. Briones “for always guiding us and helping us see what still needed to be done and improved in every scene.”

Lopez, armed with new technical skills, a deeper understanding of character analysis, and a renewed sense of confidence, Lopez views the experience as a significant foundation for her career.

Beyond the networking and logistical support from the FDCP staff, and the new friendships forged, the workshop has fundamentally shifted how she views her longevity in the business.

“I will carry everything I’ve learned with me,” Lopez said. “The brilliance of these three directors gave me lessons that I will undoubtedly use for the rest of my life in this industry,” she added.
