Noni Abao’s documentary Bloom Where You Are Planted won four major awards at the 49th Gawad Urian, held on October 8 at the Yuchengco Auditorium of De La Salle University.
Presented by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the film won Best Film, Best Documentary, Best Direction for Abao, and Best Editing for Che Tagyamon. The recognition adds to its achievements at the 21st Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, where it won Best Full-Length Film and Best Editing.
Produced by Alex Poblete and Taripnong Cagayan Valley, Bloom Where You Are Planted documents the oppression, displacement, red-tagging, and extrajudicial atrocities experienced by land defenders and community organizers in the Cagayan Valley region.

The documentary follows activists Agnes Mesina and Amanda Echanis, as well as the story of Randy Malayao, which is recounted by his close friend, veteran journalist Raymund Villanueva. Set against the landscapes of Northern Luzon, the film examines the struggles of rural communities amid land grabbing, mining, militarization, and agricultural displacement.
Through Abao’s measured direction and Tagyamon’s editing, the film brings together personal accounts and broader social issues, presenting the experiences of community organizers and land defenders in their pursuit of social justice.
Abao dedicated the film’s success to the activists and community members whose stories it documents, emphasizing that the recognition belongs to those who continue to resist repression across the country.

Veteran filmmaker and actress Laurice Guillen also received the Natatanging Gawad Urian Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to Philippine cinema.
Other awardees included Quezon, which won Best Production Design for Monica Sebial, Best Cinematography for Pong Ignacio, and Best Music for Jerrold Tarog. Jericho Rosales and Carlo Aquino shared Best Actor honors for Quezon and Bar Boys: After School, respectively.
Maris Racal (Sunshine) and Odette Khan (Bar Boys: After School) shared the Best Actress award. Jennica Garcia won Best Supporting Actress for Sunshine, while Will Ashley received Best Supporting Actor for Bar Boys: After School.

Organized by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino in partnership with De La Salle University and the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the 49th Gawad Urian recognized outstanding achievements in Filipino filmmaking.
With four awards, Bloom Where You Are Planted further establishes its place among the country’s acclaimed documentaries, bringing the experiences of rural communities and land defenders to a wider audience through cinema.
