Filipino narrative short film “Ang Pagbabalik ni Max Buwaya” continues to gain international recognition after being officially selected for the Diwa Filipino Film Festival in Seattle, Washington, this October, and the 7th Gandhara Independent Film Festival in Pakistan this month, where it will compete in the Foreign Language Narrative Short category.
Set in 1989, the film follows Rody, played by Jun Sabayton, an aging former ring villain who once performed under the moniker Max Buwaya during the height of the local professional wrestling era. Now living an isolated life decades after his heyday, Rody finds comfort in his old wrestling mask as he struggles with a world that has seemingly moved on without him.
Determined to reclaim the glory he once knew, Rody begins training for what could be his final bout, chasing an elusive championship belt and one last chance to prove himself inside the ring. His journey becomes a reflection of the struggles of those trying to hold on to an identity shaped by a past that no longer exists.
Written and directed by John Luke Miraflor, who also serves as the film’s director of photography, “Ang Pagbabalik ni Max Buwaya” explores identity, endurance, and the emotional cost of pursuing an unfinished dream. Through Rody’s story, the film examines what happens when the spotlight fades and a person is left confronting the distance between who they once were and who they have become.
Miraflor is a filmmaker, film educator, and creative producer raised in Malabon and an alumnus of the University of the East College of Fine Arts, Architecture, and Design in Caloocan. His filmmaking work includes the short film “ASWE,” which competed at the 23rd FACINE Filipino International Cine Festival in San Francisco and the 9th CMS International Children’s Film Festival in Lucknow, India, as well as “Limbo,” screened at Flickerfest and Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, and “Clairvoyant,” featured at Interfilm Berlin and Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
As an active member of the Filipino Society of Cinematographers, Miraflor also served as director of photography for “Transients” and “Lunod,” both of which screened at Cinemalaya and Gawad Alternatibo. In 2024, he received the 39th Gintong Parangal ng Malabon for his artistic contributions to Philippine independent cinema.

With its upcoming screenings in Seattle and Pakistan, “Ang Pagbabalik ni Max Buwaya” continues to bring a distinctly Filipino story to international audiences, using the world of professional wrestling as a backdrop for a deeply human story about identity, resilience, and the determination to finish a dream before the final bell.
