An obsessive pursuit of perfection takes an unexpected turn in The Keeper, one of the finalists in the Short Film Category of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2026.
Directed by Nolan Rae Fabular and TRNZ, the animated short follows the devoted keeper of a meticulously curated trophy hall whose carefully ordered world is disrupted by an unexpected intruder. As the keeper relentlessly searches for the unwelcome presence, the pursuit slowly unravels the rigid order she has long protected, revealing that life has quietly flourished within the very space she tried to control.
For Fabular, The Keeper marks another step in his passion for storytelling through animation. Beginning his career as an art director in advertising, he eventually found his calling in directing and co-founded an independent animation studio dedicated to exploring Filipino identity, culture, and original stories through animation. Co-director TRNZ, a visual artist known for transforming ordinary scenes into emotionally resonant works, brings his distinct artistic perspective to the film, blending understated imagery with themes of memory, familiarity, and quiet unease.
The film features an accomplished creative team led by Fabular, who serves as director, screenwriter, storyboard artist, editor, production designer, animator, and compositor. Gianco Ante composed the original score, while Mario Consunji handled the sound effects and Dan Gil provided additional sound mixing. Executive producers are TRNZ and Fleet Studios, with Denise Jose as producer, Melody Santos as development producer, and Jan Tristan Pandy as associate producer.
The Keeper joins this year’s Cinemalaya 2026 Short Film Category finalists, which include Elenita Elena Elaine, Honey, My Love, So Sweet, Hoy, Hoy, Ingat!, kung paano kakalas., Para-Paraan, Runo!, Silkscreen, Sorbetes, and The River Flows in Different Places.
Meanwhile, the Full-Length Category finalists are A.ni.mál, 2 Valid IDs, Ganggang, Mag-iina, Hand of God, Kaka sa Yawan, Status: Rejected, Tayo Lang ang Nakakaalam, and Tirik.
The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival 2026 runs from August 6 to 18, with screenings at Red Carpet Cinemas at Shangri-La Plaza, selected Ayala Malls, and Gateway Cineplex.
