The film follows Virginia “Biring” Divinagracia, a 69-year-old widow who has devoted her life to caring for her daughter and granddaughter while quietly holding on to one dream—to reunite with her son in the United States. After receiving her fourth U.S. visa rejection, Biring begins to believe that the life she has long envisioned is slipping away.

Everything changes when an old friend introduces her to the digital world. There, she meets Steve, a charming American who makes her feel seen, appreciated, and loved for the first time in decades. As their online relationship deepens, Biring’s hopes of finding love and finally reaching America are reignited. But as her life becomes increasingly centered around a screen, the boundaries between hope and illusion begin to blur, forcing her to confront difficult truths about family, self-worth, and the dreams she refuses to abandon.
Blending heartfelt family drama with timely social commentary, Status: Rejected examines loneliness in old age, digital intimacy, migration, and the universal desire to be loved and valued, regardless of age.

The film marks the feature directorial debut of Vahn Leinard Pascual, a queer Filipino filmmaker whose distinct visual style is shaped by his background in production design. His previous works have earned recognition both locally and internationally.

His short film Sina Alexa, Xander at ang Universe (2020) received critical acclaim at the Metro Manila Film Festival and the Toronto Queer Film Festival, while Alingasngas ng mga Kuliglig (2021) won Best Picture at the International Silent Film Festival Manila, screened at QCinema, and was later acquired by the Criterion Channel.
In 2022, CNN Philippines Life named Pascual one of the Eight Emerging Filipino Directors to Watch Out For. He also received the Ani ng Dangal (Harvest of Honors) from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and became the youngest recipient of the inaugural CREATE Award in the Audiovisual category presented by the House of Representatives of the Philippines. Pascual has likewise represented the country in several international film programs, including the JF & TIFF Lounge: Asian Film Students Exchange Program and the Niigata International Animation Film Festival Camp in Japan.
Status: Rejected stars Ruby Ruiz, Alessandra de Rossi, Beverly Salviejo, and Yani Villarosa. Pascual serves as director and co-screenwriter, with the screenplay written alongside Jaymar Castro and Ivan Villacorta Gentolizo.
