Strong first-quarter gains keep industry on track as motorcycles remain a vital mobility solution for Filipinos

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association (MDPPA) reported total motorcycle sales of 939,528 units in the first half of 2026, posting a 3.58 percent year-on-year increase from the 907,054 units sold during the same period in 2025.

Despite softer market conditions following the industry’s exceptionally strong performance last year, the Philippine motorcycle sector continued to grow, underscoring the enduring role of motorcycles as an essential and practical mode of transportation for millions of Filipinos.

Growth in the first half was driven by a robust opening quarter, with sales reaching 496,868 units, up 11.6 percent from the first quarter of 2025. While second-quarter sales eased to 442,660 units, a 4.2 percent decline compared with 462,007 units in the same period last year, the strong start to 2026 enabled the industry to maintain positive overall growth.

Automatic motorcycles remained the country’s top choice, accounting for 655,004 units sold during the first six months of the year. Their continued popularity reflects strong consumer demand for convenient, fuel-efficient, and practical transportation for everyday commuting.

Business motorcycles followed with 148,989 units, highlighting their growing importance in supporting delivery services, microenterprises, and other livelihood opportunities. Mopeds recorded 107,632 units, while the street category reached 24,346 units. Big bikes contributed 2,994 units, with other motorcycle categories accounting for 563 units.

The first-half results demonstrate the industry’s resilience amid a more challenging operating environment and a higher comparison base from 2025. Although growth moderated compared with last year’s pace, motorcycles continue to be the preferred transportation option for many Filipinos because of their affordability, reliability, and fuel efficiency. The sustained expansion also reflects the industry’s strong fundamentals and its ability to adapt to changing economic conditions while addressing the country’s evolving mobility needs.

“The first half of the year reflects the resilience of the Philippine motorcycle industry,” said MDPPA President Erwin D. Estrada. “While market conditions have become more challenging compared with last year’s exceptionally strong performance, motorcycles continue to meet the everyday mobility needs of Filipinos. The industry’s continued growth demonstrates that consumers recognize the value motorcycles provide through affordability, fuel efficiency, and dependable transportation for work, business, and daily life.”

Looking ahead, the MDPPA remains optimistic that the Philippine motorcycle industry will continue to post steady long-term growth, supported by sustained demand for affordable mobility solutions and the sector’s ability to adapt to changing market and economic conditions.
