Netflix has officially confirmed the production of its upcoming medical drama First Doctor, bringing together an impressive cast led by Jung Ryeo-Won, Ha Yoon-Kyoung, Bek Hyun-Jin, Kim Jong-Soo, and Kim Moo-Yul. The series also marks the highly anticipated reunion of director Hong Jong-Chan and writer Kim Min-Suk, the acclaimed duo behind the award-winning legal drama Juvenile Justice.
Set in a pediatric surgery department facing the threat of closure, First Doctor follows the medical professionals who fight against mounting challenges to protect their young patients. The drama aims to explore not only the realities of healthcare but also the resilience and dedication of those who work tirelessly to save lives in the face of institutional and personal struggles.
Jung Ryeo-Won stars as Heo Ji-wan, a brilliant pediatric surgeon known throughout the hospital for her uncompromising attitude and outspoken personality. Often regarded as the hospital’s “ultimate troublemaker,” Ji-wan is forced to return to YEONHWA University Hospital after an unexpected incident. Determined to keep the struggling pediatric surgery unit alive, she takes on the difficult mission of protecting both the department and the vulnerable children under its care.
Joining her is Ha Yoon-Kyoung as Ki Eun-gyeol, a talented third-year resident whose confidence and rebellious nature frequently put her at odds with Ji-wan. Their intense mentor-mentee relationship is expected to be one of the drama’s central storylines, creating both conflict and growth as they navigate the pressures of the medical field.
Veteran actors Bek Hyun-Jin and Kim Jong-Soo will portray influential figures within the hospital administration. Bek takes on the role of Head of Surgery Son Sang-baek, while Kim plays Vice Director Lee Chang-gon. Their presence adds another layer of tension to the story as institutional politics and leadership decisions shape the future of the pediatric surgery department.
Meanwhile, Kim Moo-Yul will play Bae Su-wol, a charismatic anesthesiology professor and longtime friend of Heo Ji-wan. The role marks Kim’s third collaboration with director Hong Jong-Chan, following their previous work together on Juvenile Justice and Teach You a Lesson. His character is expected to provide both emotional support and stability amid the challenges facing the medical team.
Beyond its medical setting, First Doctor promises to tackle larger systemic issues while highlighting the human connections that emerge during times of crisis. With Kim Min-Suk’s acclaimed storytelling and Hong Jong-Chan’s grounded direction, the series is poised to deliver an emotional and thought-provoking drama that shines a light on the people who refuse to give up on saving lives.
