SM Investments Corporation, the parent company of the SM Group, highlighted the value of long-term business thinking as companies navigate rapid changes in technology, consumer behavior, and economic conditions during the 24th MAP International CEO Conference, themed “In the Age of Flux: Scaling the Next Inflection Points.”
The conference brought together business leaders to discuss how companies can respond to major shifts, including the rise of artificial intelligence, evolving consumer preferences, and changing market conditions, while identifying developments that could have a lasting impact on their businesses.
In his welcome address, SM Investments President and Chief Executive Officer Frederic C. DyBuncio said the group’s nearly seven decades of experience in the Philippines have reinforced the importance of looking beyond short-term economic cycles.
“At SM, nearly seven decades in the Philippines have taught us to look beyond the cycle. We have seen periods of uncertainty, disruption and rapid change. Through them, one thing has remained constant: the long-term potential of the Philippines and the aspirations of the Filipino people,” DyBuncio said.
He also highlighted the growing opportunities outside Metro Manila as regional economies continue to develop and consumer aspirations evolve.
“That potential is increasingly visible beyond Metro Manila. As incomes rise and aspirations evolve, opportunities are opening across the regions. For businesses, this means looking beyond where growth has traditionally been concentrated and investing where the next generation of demand is emerging,” he said.
The conference also explored the role of technology in helping businesses understand changing markets. Artificial intelligence and data can enable companies to identify trends and patterns more quickly, but business leaders still play an important role in determining which developments matter, where resources should be directed, and when to take action.
SM Investments’ long-term approach is reflected in the continued expansion of its businesses across retail, banking, property, and investments, including their growing presence in regional markets beyond traditional economic centers.
As the parent company of these established businesses, SM Investments benefits from their continued growth and the dividends they generate, while allowing each business to pursue opportunities within its respective market.
This structure supports a long-term approach in which SM Investments and its businesses can continue to invest, expand, and respond to changing customer needs while maintaining a focus on sustainable growth.
For the SM Group, the approach remains centered on understanding where demand is heading, investing with discipline, and staying connected to the customers and communities its businesses serve.
