Filipino sociopolitical thriller Silenced Nights is set to compete at the Bangkok International Film Festival from September 15 to 27, following its historic selection as the first Filipino film to compete in the Toronto International Film Festival’s (TIFF) juried Platform program.
Executive producer Atty. Joji Villanueva Alonso confirmed the film’s inclusion in the Bangkok festival’s main competition, where it will compete for a US$15,000 cash prize. The film is also set to make two more stops at European film festivals later this year.
Written by Troy Espiritu and directed by Lawrence Fajardo, Silenced Nights follows an ordinary gadget repairman, played by Nico Antonio, whose life changes after he witnesses police officers kill a teenager during an anti-drug operation in a Manila slum. Driven by his conscience, he helps the victim’s grieving mother seek the truth.
The film also stars Lotlot De Leon, Ina Feleo, Joel Saracho, Tanya Gomez, Dylan Ray Talon, Jorrybell Agoto, Simon Ibarra, Mario Magallona, Rom Factolerin, Soliman Cruz, Hector Macaso, Raul Morit, Bombi Plata, Apollo Abraham, DMs Boongaling, Mae Paner, Tess Jamias, Timothy Castillo, Kenken Nuyad, Micko Laurente, Enzo Osorio, and Aquisha Tombiga.
Inspired by the 2017 death of teenager Kian delos Santos during the Duterte administration’s war on drugs, the film explores systemic violence, institutional fear, and the courage to stand up for justice. Its central message is captured in the tagline, “Where fear prevails, justice is silenced.”
Fajardo, known for his socially grounded and fast-paced approach to independent filmmaking, brings a documentary-style urgency to the project. He previously gained recognition at the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival for Kultado (2005) and later directed acclaimed films including Amok (2011) and Posas (2012). Alonso, meanwhile, heads Quantum Films and has produced both commercially successful films and independent projects that have gained recognition on the international festival circuit.
Shot entirely on location in Happyland, Tondo, and using a cinéma vérité style, Silenced Nights is co-produced by Quantum Films, House on Fire (France), and House on Fire International (Taiwan), with support from the Film Development Council of the Philippines. The film will have its world premiere at TIFF on September 13, where it will compete for the US$20,000 Platform Prize, before opening theatrically in the Philippines on September 16 with an R-16 classification from the MTRCB.
