The Sandbox Collective brings back its acclaimed, Gawad Buhay-recognized production to Makati
The Sandbox Collective is bringing back its acclaimed staging of the award-winning rock musical Spring Awakening for a highly anticipated and limited rerun in February 2027 at The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater, Rockwell Center, Makati City.
The production’s return follows its remarkable recognition at the Gawad Buhay Awards, where it received 17 citations, cementing its place among the most celebrated local theater productions of the season.

Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Spring Awakening features book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Grammy Award-nominated artist Duncan Sheik. Based on Frank Wedekind’s controversial play, the rock musical explores adolescence, sexuality, repression, and the struggle for understanding in a society governed by rigid expectations.
Set in 19th-century Germany, the story follows a group of teenagers as they navigate their changing bodies, emerging desires, and questions about life. Their search for answers brings them into conflict with uncommunicative parents, restrictive institutions, and a deeply conservative society. Fueled by an electrifying alternative rock score, the musical transforms the characters’ frustrations and repressions into a powerful portrait of youthful angst and rebellion.

Directed by Gawad Buhay nominee Andrei Nikolai Pamintuan, whose credits include Muli, Lungs, Sa Wakas, and Fringe Manila, the production features musical direction by multi-awarded Ejay Yatco, known for Side Show, Next to Normal, and Little Shop of Horrors.
Joining Pamintuan and Yatco are Nunoy Van Den Burgh as choreographer, Missy Maramara as intimacy director, Wika Nadera as set designer, Raven Ong as costume designer, Gabbi Campomanes as assistant director, and D Cortezano as lighting designer.

With its return, Spring Awakening aims to reignite conversations on youth, identity, sexuality, morality, and social expectations while continuing The Sandbox Collective’s education and advocacy initiatives.
Ticket information will be announced soon.
Spring Awakening is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI), New York, NY, USA.
