What happens when a once-famous pop group gets a second chance after twenty years apart? That’s the question at the heart of Wild Sing, the new Korean comedy film starring Gang Dong-won, premiering July 31 exclusively on Netflix.
The film follows Triangle, a three-member co-ed dance group that dominated the charts in the early 2000s before an unexpected scandal abruptly ended their careers. Two decades later, an opportunity to reunite for a comeback performance brings the former stars back together, forcing them to confront old wounds, broken friendships, and the choices that kept them apart.
Gang Dong-won stars as Hyun-woo, Triangle’s former leader who now struggles to make a living as a survival show broadcaster. Determined to revive the group, he tracks down his former bandmates: Sang-gu (Um Tae-goo), a rapper buried in debt after a failed solo career, and Do-mi (Park Ji-hyun), the group’s former center who left the entertainment industry behind to become the daughter-in-law of a powerful chaebol family.
The film also features Oh Jung-se as Triangle’s longtime rival, the self-proclaimed “Ballad Prince” Choi Seong-gon, adding another layer of rivalry and humor to the story.
Adding authenticity to its K-pop backdrop, Wild Sing enlisted acclaimed music producers Shim Eun-ji, known for work with TWICE, SHINee, IU, and ITZY, and KASS, whose credits include NMIXX, GOT7, and ITZY, to create Triangle’s fictional discography. Choreography was handled by Yang Wook of Nana Company, while the group’s costumes recreate the evolution of K-pop fashion, from colorful first-generation idol looks to sleek Y2K-inspired styles.
Ahead of the film’s release, the retro-inspired music video for Triangle’s debut song, “Love is,” generated strong buzz online, giving audiences a nostalgic glimpse into the fictional group’s glory days.
Director Son Jae-gon, known for My Scary Girl and Secret Zoo, hopes the film delivers both laughter and comfort.
“Making comedy films helps me view the world with a bit more ease,” he says. “Wild characters go through wild struggles and sing wildly. I hope audiences enjoy Wild Sing, laugh along with the characters, and leave humming its songs.”
Blending comedy, nostalgia, music, and heartfelt friendship, Wild Sing celebrates second chances and proves it’s never too late to step back into the spotlight.
