A groundbreaking chapter in Philippine theater unfolds as LIYAB, the country’s first full-scale musical performed entirely by active-duty soldiers, premieres at the Metropolitan Theater on August 13 and 14, 2026.
Presented by Teatro Kaugnay in partnership with KreativExpo Inc., the Metropolitan Theater, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), LIYAB is a landmark production that showcases the artistic excellence of the Philippine Army’s only theater company composed exclusively of active-duty soldiers. More than a stage production, it highlights the power of the performing arts in promoting patriotism, preserving culture, and strengthening national identity.
The production was inspired by the vision of Major General Joseph Norwin D. Pasamonte, Commander of the 7th Infantry Division, who champions the use of the arts as a platform for education, cultural appreciation, and nation-building alongside military service.
Written by Captain Ralph Andy Ranario, who also penned the musical’s lyrics, LIYAB brings to life stories of courage, sacrifice, resilience, and love for country through original music, dynamic choreography, and compelling theatrical storytelling. The musical celebrates the enduring Filipino spirit while encouraging audiences to reflect on the values that continue to define the nation.
While the cast is made up entirely of active-duty soldiers, LIYAB is also a testament to the collaboration between the Armed Forces and the country’s creative community.
Leading the civilian creative team is Lean Jurado of KreativExpo Inc., who serves as Creative Director, Co-Director, Set Designer, and Lighting Concept Designer. Joining the production are Joshua Rico Santos (Additional Choreographer), Bon Franz Raphael Gonzalez (Vocal Coach), and Jerico Rutaquio Namoro (Music Arranger and Sound Designer). They work alongside the soldier-artists of Teatro Kaugnay, including Second Lieutenant Beatriz Crystal Calumpang (Associate Vocal Coach), Corporal Jay Balequia (Choreographer), and Private First Class Fresher Jr. Madrid (Visual Designer, Photographer, and Videographer), reflecting a unique partnership between military discipline and artistic creativity.
More than entertainment, LIYAB represents a shared commitment to fostering patriotism through the arts. By bringing together military personnel and civilian artists, the production demonstrates how storytelling can inspire dialogue, strengthen communities, and deepen appreciation for the country’s history and cultural heritage.
Following its premiere at the Metropolitan Theater, LIYAB aims to tour schools, local government units, communities, and cultural institutions across the country, bringing its message of courage, unity, and nationalism to more Filipinos.
