Award-winning independent filmmaker JL Burgos brings a heartfelt story of childhood friendship, rivalry, and resilience to the big screen with Ganggang, one of the official finalists in the Full-Length Category of Cinemalaya 2026.

Set in the world of traditional spider fighting, Ganggang follows three boys whose search for the ultimate fighting spider becomes a test of their friendship and courage. The film’s story centers on Ilay and Ten-ten, who face defeat after their first clash against Anton’s powerful fighting spider. With Anton once again dominating their school, newcomer Mel from the city becomes fascinated by the neighborhood game and eventually joins the boys in confronting a bigger challenge, the real bully in their community.

Through the simple yet intense world of ganggang, Burgos highlights the complexities of growing up, finding belonging, and discovering the strength that comes from friendship and unity.

Known for his socially relevant and human rights-centered works, JL Burgos is an independent filmmaker and visual artist whose films have explored issues of justice, freedom, and the Filipino experience. His latest documentary, Alipato at Muog, received the Special Jury Prize at Cinemalaya Film Festival XX and earned major recognitions, including Best Picture and Best Director at the FAMAS Awards 2025 and Best Documentary, Best Editing, and Best Film at the Gawad Urian 2025.

Before Ganggang, Burgos directed and produced acclaimed mid-length documentaries such as Portraits of Mosquito Press and Han-Ayan, focusing on press freedom and the right to self-determination. For more than two decades, he has worked in film, television, and digital media as a director, cinematographer, editor, scriptwriter, and producer.

Ganggang features a talented ensemble led by Raine Dela Cruz, Kenneth “Butchoy” Vincent Mendoza, and Don Rishmond Cerbito, with supporting performances from Prince España, Brian Arda, Don Melvin Boongaling, Katrish Aristoki, Elora Españo, Hershey Neri, Pau Benitez, Anton Nolasco, Francis Mata, Tabs Sumulong, Manuel Genabe, Pio Raphael Benedicto, Jers Guiwa, Raphael Del Prado, Jhaniel Pellado, Rencel Bago, Gene Trillana, Dave Ignacio, Wesley “Budoy” San Sebastian, Marian Lavado, April Obnamia, and Alicia Bea Obligado.

The film is part of the Cinemalaya 2026 Full-Length Category finalists, which include A.ni.mál, 2 Valid IDs, Hand of God, Mag-iina, Kaka sa Yawan, Status: Rejected, Tayo Lang ang Nakakaalam, and Tirik.

Meanwhile, the Short Film Category finalists are Elenita Elena Elaine, Honey, My Love, So Sweet, Hoy, Hoy, Ingat!, kung paano kakalas., Para-Para-an, Runo!, Silkscreen, Sorbetes, The Keeper, and The River Flows in Different Places.

The Cinemalaya 2026 films will be screened from August 6 to 18 at Red Carpet Cinemas at Shangri-La Plaza, selected Ayala Malls, and Gateway Cineplex.

With Ganggang, JL Burgos continues his filmmaking journey by transforming a familiar Filipino childhood pastime into a moving story about friendship, bravery, and the battles that shape young lives.
