Filipino filmmaker Vahn Leinard C. Pascual is bringing his debut feature film, Status: Rejected, to the international stage as it joins the First Feature Competition of the 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, running from November 6 to 22, 2026.
The film, which won recognition at the 2026 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, is the sole Philippine entry in this year’s competition at the FIAPF-accredited A-list festival.
Starring veteran actress Ruby Ruiz, Status: Rejected follows Virginia “Biring” Divinagracia, a 69-year-old widow who feels increasingly overlooked in her own home. After four consecutive rejections of her U.S. tourist visa applications, Biring grows increasingly discouraged about reuniting with her son abroad.

Encouraged by a friend, she explores the digital world and meets an American man named Steve Johnson. Their online romance offers a renewed sense of hope, but as her expectations grow, Biring must confront the uncertainties of their connection, generational conflicts, economic hardship, and her desire to feel valued.
Co-written by Pascual, Jaymar Castro, and Ivan Villacorta Gentolizo, the film combines humor and emotional complexity in its portrayal of an older woman navigating loneliness and social alienation. Rather than reducing its protagonist to a figure of pity, the narrative explores her desires, choices, and search for meaningful connection.
For Pascual, the film’s international selection is a significant milestone in his filmmaking journey.

“Personally, this selection means so much to me, especially since this is my first feature film. To have a deeply Filipino story reach an international audience is something I could only dream of when we were making it,” Pascual shared.
The director also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to present his debut feature alongside emerging filmmakers from other countries.
“Being part of the First Feature Competition also makes this experience particularly meaningful, as it gives emerging filmmakers like me an opportunity to share our first features on an international platform,” he added.
At Cinemalaya XXII, Status: Rejected won the NETPAC Award for its portrayal of Asian realities. Ruiz also earned the Best Actress award, sharing the honor with Marietta Subong, popularly known as Pokwang, for 2 Valid IDs.
The film’s cast includes Alessandra de Rossi as Biring’s overcontrolling daughter, Anna; Beverly Salviejo as her sharp-witted friend, Tessie; and Yani Villarosa as her rebellious granddaughter, Sophia.
Pascual collaborated with cinematographer Martika Ramirez Escobar, editor Che Tagyamon, production designer Marielle Hizon, and composer Hans Piozon. The film’s executive producers are Paul Soriano, Mark Victor, and Omar Sortijas, with Micah Tadena and Fea Fortuna serving as producers.
From its award-winning run at Cinemalaya to its upcoming international competition in Estonia, Status: Rejected brings a distinctly Filipino story to a global audience, exploring the universal longing for connection, dignity, and belonging.
