Education Secretary Sonny Angara led the nationwide launch of National Teachers’ Month 2026 on Saturday, calling on Filipinos to put educators at the center of the celebration and recognize their sacrifices, dedication, and vital role in shaping the nation’s future.
Held at the Limketkai Atrium, the kick-off carried the theme “Teacher, Ikaw Naman,” underscoring that after years of teachers putting their learners first, it is now their turn to be thanked, celebrated, and prioritized.
Angara credited President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for initiatives supporting teachers and reaffirmed the Department of Education’s commitment to providing educators with the support they deserve.
“Basta kakayanin, ibibigay ng ating Pangulo,” Angara said, emphasizing DepEd’s commitment to provide what it can for teachers.
Amid recent concerns over school safety, Angara also reminded educators that schools must remain nurturing spaces where learners feel cared for and supported.
“Hindi lang tayo tumatayo bilang authority figures sa eskwelahan. Huwag natin kakalimutan, tayo ay tumatayo bilang pangalawang tahanan,” he said.
In an increasingly digital and AI-driven world, Angara stressed that technology cannot replace the human connection teachers provide.
“There will never be a substitute for a warm hug, a warm pat on the shoulder, or even saying hi and mentioning the name of our learners,” he said.
The festive launch featured cultural performances, emotional tributes to Mindanao educators, a variety show, interactive activities, raffle prizes, and a Bench Cheering Competition involving six regions in Mindanao.
Among those recognized were 2026 Metrobank Foundation Most Outstanding Filipino awardee Sheila Marie Amigo of Zamboanga Sibugay and DepEd Hero Jeric Maribao of Misamis Occidental.
The event also featured the unveiling of a Special Commemorative Cover by the Philippine Postal Corporation.
Corporate partner McDonald’s Philippines donated 50 ReClassified Chairs to East City Central School. The chairs were made by repurposing retired restaurant assets, alongside meal donations and other activities for teachers and attendees.
The celebration concluded with a community singing of “Hawak Kamay” and a video message from First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos, who thanked educators for their patience, dedication, and commitment to inspiring learners.
Beyond the festivities, Angara highlighted reforms aimed at improving teachers’ working conditions.
Under the Expanded Career Progression System, more than 93,000 teachers and school heads have already been promoted, while DepEd continues to establish clearer career pathways for educators.
DepEd has also reduced regular school paperwork from 174 forms to just five, allowing teachers to spend more time teaching and mentoring learners.
Financial and wellness benefits have likewise expanded. Under the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act, the annual non-taxable teaching allowance increased from ₱5,000 to ₱10,000. Teachers are also entitled to an annual medical allowance of up to ₱7,000, five days of paid annual wellness leave, and expanded Vacation Service Credits of up to 30 days per year.
National Teachers’ Month will run through October 5, culminating in National Teachers’ Day, with DepEd and its partners continuing efforts to recognize and support educators nationwide.
