The Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines (CHR) was among the major awardees at the 2026 Freedom Flame Awards, held at the Decagon Events Place in Pasig City as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Philippines.
Carrying the theme “Kalayaan Noon, Ngayon at Bukas – 40 Years of Freedom in Action,” the event brought together human rights advocates, policymakers, youth leaders, and artists to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to strengthening democracy and expanding civic spaces.
CHR was honored for its sustained commitment to protecting human rights, upholding the rule of law, and defending the dignity and freedoms of Filipinos.
Representing the agency, Chief of Project Management Division Princess Molleno accepted the award from Atty. Karry Sison, Managing Trustee of the Center for Liberalism and Democracy.
In its citation, FNF described CHR as a “steadfast guardian of justice, accountability, and democratic values,” underscoring the agency’s role in reminding the public that freedom is sustained through courage, integrity, and dedicated public service.
Human rights advocate and former Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III, who delivered the evening’s keynote address, emphasized that protecting freedom is a shared civic responsibility. He noted that freedom must be actively nurtured and that passing the torch to others allows its light to grow even brighter.
Other organizations and institutions were also recognized during the ceremony for their contributions to democratic governance and civic participation.
Angat Pinas, Inc., or Angat Buhay, was honored for transforming compassion into organized civic action through its Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network. Executive Director Raffy Magno accepted the award on behalf of the organization’s volunteers.
The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) was recognized for strengthening regional partnerships and promoting liberal democracy across Asia, with CALD Chair and former Secretary Butch Abad accepting the award.
The Local Government Unit of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, led by Mayor Alfredo “JR” Coro II, was recognized for advancing inclusive local leadership and participatory governance.
Meanwhile, the Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership was honored for its work in developing young leaders grounded in good governance and ethical leadership. The award was accepted by Marian Pastor Roces and former Nagcarlan Vice Mayor Amie Hernandez.
FNF Philippines Project Manager Yanyan Araña also received individual recognition for her dedication to advancing the foundation’s mission.
As FNF Philippines marks 40 years of work in the country and the 15th year of the Freedom Flame program, the awards ceremony underscored the continuing importance of active citizenship, institutional integrity, and collective action in protecting democratic values and constitutional rights.
