The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival has championed fearless storytelling and provided a platform for Filipino filmmakers whose works challenge, inspire, and spark meaningful conversations for 22 years.
Returning from August 6 to 18, this year’s festival carries the theme “Cinemalaya 22: Reel Reflections,” highlighting cinema as a mirror of Filipino realities, aspirations, struggles, and triumphs. Through independent films rooted in authenticity and artistic vision, Cinemalaya continues to showcase stories that deepen our understanding of ourselves and one another.
The festival’s competition features nine full-length films and ten short films exploring themes of identity, family, memory, resilience, justice, love, and the complexities of contemporary life.
Competing for the Balanghai Trophy in the Full-Length Category are: A.ni.mál by Dustin Celestino; 2 VALID IDs by Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan and Abet Pagdagdagan Raz; GANGGANG by JL Burgos; HAND OF GOD by Mark Duane Angos; MAG-IINA by Giancarlo Abrahan and Guelan Luarca; KAKA SA YAWAN by Alpha Habon; STATUS: REJECTED by Vahn Leinard Pascual; TAYO LANG ANG NAKAKAALAM by David Corpuz; and TIRIK by May-i Guia Padilla.
The Short Film Category finalists are: ELENITA ELENA ELAINE, HONEY, MY LOVE, SO SWEET, HOY, HOY, INGAT!, kung paano kakalas., PARA-PARAAN, RUNO!, SILKSCREEN, SORBETES, THE KEEPER, and THE RIVER FLOWS IN DIFFERENT PLACES.
The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. bring the festival back to Red Carpet Cinemas at Shangri-La Plaza as its main venue, with Ayala Malls continuing its long-standing support and Gateway Cineplex returning as a partner venue to make independent cinema more accessible to audiences.
Running alongside the festival is the 38th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, Southeast Asia’s longest-running independent film competition, showcasing works in narrative, experimental, documentary, and animation categories.
Since its launch in 2005, Cinemalaya has supported the production and exhibition of more than 1,000 Filipino independent films, helping filmmakers share stories that have gained recognition locally and internationally.
As Cinemalaya 22: Reel Reflections unfolds, audiences are invited to see themselves in the stories on screen and discover new perspectives through the power of Philippine independent cinema.
