GMA Public Affairs and GMA Pictures’ animated documentary film “58th” continues to build international momentum after being officially selected for the 2026 Doc Edge Festival, New Zealand’s leading documentary festival and an Academy Awards-qualifying event.

The latest selection adds to the film’s growing list of global recognitions, following its inclusion earlier this year in the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Widely recognized as a major platform for documentary storytelling, Doc Edge is accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, with winners in select categories qualifying for Oscar consideration. The festival highlights outstanding films from New Zealand and across the globe, championing works that demonstrate excellence in storytelling, celebrate diversity, and spark meaningful social conversations.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Carl Joseph Papa, “58th” revisits the Maguindanao Massacre, considered the deadliest attack on journalists in history, while honoring the victims and renewing focus on Reynaldo “Bebot” Momay’s ongoing fight to be officially recognized as the 58th victim. The film stars Glaiza de Castro alongside a notable ensemble cast.

Blending animation with archival footage, “58th” introduces the story to younger viewers and international audiences through a striking visual approach. The film examines themes of press freedom, fragile democracies, election-related violence, impunity, and accountability, issues that continue to resonate worldwide. Since its world premiere, the film has drawn praise from international programmers and audiences for its bold storytelling and strong political relevance.

Its screenings at Annecy, regarded as the world’s premier animation festival, and Rotterdam, known for championing daring and innovative cinema, helped establish “58th” as part of a new wave of fearless international filmmaking. Its inclusion in Doc Edge further expands the film’s reach within the global documentary and animation festival circuit.

The 2026 Doc Edge Festival runs from June 24 to July 12 in New Zealand. “58th” will screen in Auckland on June 29 at 8:15 p.m. and again on July 2 at 6 p.m. (Auckland time).
