An adventurous reimagining of Lord of the Flies set on a remote Visayan island, Bangaw brings William Golding’s classic tale into a bold Filipino context.
Now in its 92nd season, the Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) presents BANGAW, a Filipino play with music adapted from Golding’s iconic novel. Written by Gold Villar-Lim, with music by Vince Lim and additional songs by Dudz Teraña, the production is directed by Teraña, a PETA Senior Artist-Teacher and FTG’s Artistic Director. Through a distinctly Filipino lens, the play interrogates survival, leadership, and identity in a fractured society shaped by present-day realities.

Set on a secluded island in the Visayas, Bangaw follows a group of high school students from different schools who are stranded after a plane crash. With no adults and no rules, the students attempt to rebuild order, only to watch their fragile system unravel. As fear spreads and the myth of a lurking monster takes hold, a deadly spiral of violence begins. The killing of a boar and the transformation of its head into an idol, the Lord of the Flies, signals a chilling descent into chaos, culminating in tragedy and the collapse of their self-made civilization.

At the heart of the story is Raf, portrayed by Sam Siasoyco, who struggles to preserve structure and reason, while Jack, alternately played by Aldin Covarrubias and Dave Bambang, rises in dominance and pulls the group toward brutality. The twins Sam and Erich navigate the tension between logic and survival, as Simone quietly serves as the moral center. Tabeks challenges rigid hierarchies, while the younger children, Tiny, Matty, and Caleb, cling to innocence amid escalating unrest. Supporting Jack is a choir-like faction that amplifies division and violence, while the haunting Panginoong Bangaw looms as a symbolic presence over the narrative. Parachutists and the Piloto serve as distant reminders of the adult world left behind.

Blending symbolic movement with raw emotional performance, Bangaw features original music that merges traditional and contemporary Filipino soundscapes. The production confronts urgent social realities, including division, abuse of power, systemic failure, moral decay, and patriarchy, while foregrounding enduring Filipino values such as bayanihan, resilience, and strategic intelligence. The result is a layered theatrical experience that challenges audiences to reflect on the kind of future being shaped today.
