Following its milestone 10th-anniversary season, The Sandbox Collective ushers in a new decade with the Tony Award-winning musical Next to Normal. This musical is a powerful production that delves into themes of love, loss, mental health, and family dynamics, offering audiences a deeply emotional and thought-provoking experience. It will run from February 1 to 23, 2025 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Theatre located in Circuit Makati.

Leading the cast in the role of Diana Goodman are Shiela Valderrama and Nikki Valdez, alternating as the complex matriarch. Nikki, a celebrated singer and actress, returns to the stage after her acclaimed performances in The Wedding Singer and the Ang Tanging Ina film franchise, where she earned a FAMAS Best Supporting Actress award for Family Matters. Shiela, an esteemed Gawad Buhay and Aliw Award winner, is known for her dynamic portrayals in Rama Hari, Passion, and most recently, Once on This Island.

The role of Diana’s devoted husband, Dan, will be shared by Floyd Tena and OJ Mariano. Floyd, a seasoned performer in theater, film, and television, received a Philstage Gawad Buhay nomination for Sandosenang Sapatos. OJ, a member of the renowned vocal group The Company, is an Awit Award winner with multiple albums and a Philstage Gawad Buhay award for his role in Rama Hari.

Taking on the role of Natalie Goodman, the Goodmans’ overachieving daughter, are Sheena Belarmino and Jam Binay. Jam, a versatile singer-songwriter and theater artist, has been seen in Bar Boys: A New Musical, Pingkian: Isang Musikal, and Ang Huling El Bimbo. Sheena, an actress, singer, and dancer under Star Magic, has showcased her talents in Lyric and Beat, ASAP Natin ‘To, and It’s Showtime, with recent stage credits in One More Chance and Tabing Ilog.

The rest of the stellar cast includes Vino Mabalot and Benedix Ramos as Gabe Goodman, Omar Uddin and Davy Narciso as Henry, and Jef Flores as Dr. Madden. Helming the production is The Sandbox Collective’s Managing Artistic Director, Toff de Venecia, alongside a distinguished creative team featuring Ejay Yatco (musical direction), Stephen Viñas (choreography), and Mark Daniel Dalacat (production design/associate director). Next to Normal will run at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater, presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). A landmark in contemporary musical theater, Next to Normal has won three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, sparking vital conversations about mental health since its Broadway debut in 2009.

Record Growth in Participation at IMMAF Youth World Championships in Al Ain Participant numbers surge fivefold, from 200 athletes in 2022 to over 1,000 in 2025 The UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation is ramping up final preparations to host the sixth edition of the IMMAF Youth World Championships, which will take place in Al Ain from July 21 to 27. More than 1,000 male and female athletes from 60 countries are set to compete, marking a record number of participants and highlighting the event’s growing global profile. Leading countries taking part include reigning champions Ukraine, as well as the United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, the UAE, and Armenia. This year, the championship will be held in Al Ain for the first time, while the UAE continues its role as host for the fourth consecutive year. Participation has surged from 200 athletes in the third edition held in 2022 to over 1,000 this year. The sharp increase confirms the championship’s rising popularity and the UAE’s key role in transforming it into a preferred destination for young talent in mixed martial arts. His Excellency Mohammed Bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Board Member of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation and Chairman of the MMA Committee, said that preparations are progressing according to a comprehensive plan covering all organisational, logistical, and technical aspects. The Federation is working closely with local and international partners to deliver an outstanding edition that reflects the UAE’s reputation for hosting world-class sporting events. “This year’s championship has attracted record participation, reflecting the rapid development of the event and reinforcing its position as a global platform for preparing the future stars of MMA,” Al Dhaheri said. “Bringing the competition to Al Ain marks a significant step forward, building on the successes of previous editions in Abu Dhabi.” Al Dhaheri added that the 2025 edition will offer a well-rounded experience for athletes, delegations, and spectators. Alongside the high-level competition, a range of cultural and entertainment programmes will help cement the championship’s status as a leading international event and a meeting point for emerging talent. Meanwhile, the UAE National Team continues its preparations at a training camp in Thailand, focused on enhancing both physical and technical readiness. The camp aims to ensure the athletes deliver a strong performance that reflects the development of MMA in the UAE and positions them to compete for top honours at the championship
