SM Green Finds partnered with renowned social entrepreneur and designer Zarah Juan to launch a livelihood project that created nearly 100 jobs, including opportunities for independent artisans and people deprived of liberty (PDL) in Quezon City. This initiative not only fostered economic growth but also focused on skill development within vulnerable communities.

The project promoted environmental sustainability by repurposing 34,000 square feet of used tarpaulins—equivalent to seven NBA basketball courts—into stylish and durable tote bags and pouches. This upcycling effort reduced waste and provided participants with entrepreneurial training, enhancing their job prospects and quality of life.

More than 52 skilled artisans from Bulacan turned Juan’s designs into reality, while PDLs were responsible for cleaning and preparing the tarpaulins for sewing.

“The tarp bag project empowered and upskilled over 30 female PDLs in Quezon City, providing them with practical skills and a sense of purpose and dignity,” said Jail Chief Inspector Lourvina Abrazado, Warden of Quezon City Jail. “It improved their well-being and reintegration prospects.”

Designed by Juan with both functionality and timeless appeal in mind, the bags reflect the project’s sustainable mission. “I wanted the design to have enduring appeal and longevity,” Juan said, expressing confidence that customers who purchase the bags will value their contribution to a sustainable lifestyle.

SM Green Finds x Zarah Juan “The Tarp Project” bags are available at Kultura branches nationwide, with tote bags priced at PHP999 and pouches at PHP499. Proceeds from the tote bag sales will support the SM Foundation’s youth and education initiatives, further extending the campaign’s social impact.

SM Green Finds is a multi-year campaign that emphasizes products made from natural, local ingredients, supporting local communities and empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises in their green practices.
