9Works Theatrical is set to restage ‘Rent’ in the Philippines in 2024, as formally announced during the closing weekend of ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!’ on September 3 and 4. Over 13 years ago, 9Works Theatrical originally presented ‘Rent’ with lead actors including Fredison Lo, Gian Madrigal, OJ Mariano, Carla Guevara-Laforteza, Noel Rayos, Job Bautista, Jenny Villegas, Cara Barredo, and Nicole Laurel Asensio. The musical, written by the multi-awarded Jonathan Larson, was staged at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium at the RCBC Building in Makati City in 2010.
‘Rent’ is a powerful and groundbreaking musical that delves into the lives of a group of struggling artists residing in New York City’s Lower Manhattan’s East Village during the thriving days of bohemian Alphabet City in the 1990s. The story revolves around their experiences with love, friendship, creativity, and the challenges they face, including issues such as poverty, AIDS, and societal prejudice. Featuring a rock-inspired score and unforgettable characters, ‘Rent’ celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, solidifying its status as a timeless and poignant work of musical theater.
The musical has been performed in several countries, including Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Canada, Thailand, South Africa, Australia, Israel, South Korea, and more, with translations in over twenty-five languages. Prior to 9Works Theatrical, acclaimed actors such as Rachel Alejandro, Bituin Escalante, Calvin Millado, JM Rodriguez, Michael de Mesa, Lee Robin Salazar, Jake Macapagal, and Joel Trinidad have taken on roles in ‘Rent’ in Manila and Singapore.
‘Rent’ features unforgettable songs like ‘I’ll Cover You,’ ‘La Vie Bohème,’ ‘Over the Moon,’ ‘Light My Candle,’ ‘Goodbye Love,’ and, most notably, ‘Seasons of Love.’
