The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD) has been named the recipient of the 2026 Freedom Flame Award, recognizing its sustained efforts to promote liberal democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and democratic cooperation across Asia.
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Philippines presented the award during its celebration of 40 years of operations in the Philippines and the 15th anniversary of the Freedom Flame Awards at Decagon Events in Pasig City. Carrying the theme “Kalayaan Noon, Ngayon at Bukas – 40 Years of Freedom in Action,” the event honored individuals and organizations working to expand democratic participation in the Philippines and the region.
Concepcion “Chit” Asis, Lead Convenor of the People Power Volunteers for Reform in the Caraga Region, presented the award to CALD Chair and former Cabinet Secretary Butch Abad, who accepted the recognition on behalf of the regional network.
In its citation, FNF recognized CALD for building partnerships among political parties, reform advocates, and civil society groups committed to freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The foundation noted that CALD’s regional work demonstrates that strengthening democracy requires cooperation that goes beyond national borders.
The 2026 Freedom Flame Awards also recognized Philippine organizations that have made significant contributions to civil society, including the Commission on Human Rights of the Philippines, Angat Buhay, the Local Government Unit of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte, and the Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership.
Speakers at the event underscored the importance of actively protecting democratic values. Former Rep. Lorenzo “Erin” Tañada III highlighted the power of sharing democratic ideals, while Mathias Kruse, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, emphasized international cooperation in promoting transparent and accountable governance.
FNF Philippines Country Director Dr. Almut Besold reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to strengthening local institutions, encouraging greater youth participation, and building regional partnerships such as CALD. The recognition of CALD and Philippine civil society organizations underscored a shared message: protecting freedom and democracy requires sustained action at both the local and regional levels.
