The Far Eastern University Theater Guild (FTG) opens its 93rd season with “MORYON,” a Filipino reimagining of Guy de Maupassant’s Mother Sauvage, written and directed by Dudz Teraña and set against the Japanese Occupation of Marinduque.
Set on Holy Thursday in Mogpog, Marinduque, the play immerses audiences in a community where the traditions of the Moriones Festival unfold alongside the harsh realities of wartime occupation. As devotees take to the streets in masks and acts of penance, the lives of ordinary islanders are quietly transformed by violence, loss, and uncertainty.
At the heart of the story is Caridad, a mother waiting for her son Joaquin, a young guerrilla determined to prove his worth in a world that has long underestimated him. When the war reaches her doorstep, Caridad is confronted with a devastating choice that forces her to weigh faith, justice, survival, and the limits of a mother’s love.
Through its distinctly Filipino setting, “MORYON” examines what happens when personal grief collides with deeply held beliefs. It raises difficult questions about the place of faith amid violence, the meaning of justice when grief takes hold, and how far a person can go before survival challenges their deepest convictions.
The production brings together a team of student artists whose work spans direction, production, technical execution, design, multimedia, marketing, publicity, and audience engagement. The creative and production team includes Assistant Director Kirstan Erin Wayne Orbegoso, Executive Director Maria Ysabel R. delos Reyes, Finance Director Trisha Tan, Production Manager Marjorie E. Uson, Head Stage Manager Danielle Schwartz, Production Designer Althea Carla H. Sibulo, Technical Director Martin Gabriel L. Mesina, Multimedia Director Johann Edgar S. Oliveros, Marketing Director Edrud Adriyel Madalan, Publicity Director Irish Jane L. Oliveros, and House Manager Zoe Trinity C. Sisam.
Maria Alexandra Mayano and Maria Ysabel Delos Reyes alternate in the role of Caridad, while Dave Bambang and Aldin Covarrubias portray Esteban.
“MORYON” runs at the FEU Center for the Arts Studio on October 1–3, 8–10, 15–17, 22–24, and 29–30, followed by November 5–7, 12–14, 19–21, and 26–28. The house opens at 6:00 PM, with performances beginning at 6:30 PM.
Guests are encouraged to arrive 30 to 60 minutes early for a free guided walk around FEU’s Art Deco Campus, recognized for its cultural and architectural significance by UNESCO and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
Tickets are priced at ₱150 for FEU students, faculty, staff, and FEU/FTG alumni with Alumni ID; ₱250 for non-FEU students with valid ID; ₱500 for FTG alumni without Alumni ID, PWDs, and senior citizens; and ₱700 for the general public.
