New P-pop group AZTER makes its debut with univerZity, a seven-track album that turns youthful experiences into music, exploring friendship, heartbreak, uncertainty, healing, and self-discovery.
The 12-member group, composed of Kean, Charlie, Tatin, Gee, Alas, Laurence, Wayne, Loyd, Kiel, Gem, Miguel, and Cray, created a fictional university where each classroom represents a different experience and lesson. The concept reflects the group’s belief that their large lineup is a strength, allowing each member’s individuality to contribute to AZTER’s identity while coming together as one team.
AZTER’s name draws inspiration from the aster flower and a shining star, reflecting the group’s mantra to “blossom like a flower and shine like a star.” The letter “Z” also represents Zodiac, one of the group’s two sub-units, alongside AXIS.
The album features “Parang May Mali,” “Kupido,” “Kick Ball Challenge,” “K Dot,” “OTW,” “Unlove You,” and “Boys Night Out,” with compositions and productions from Roel Rostata, Patrick Rodriguez, John Reinard Fernandez, Jungee Marcelo, Renz Jomel Salazar, Ron Pangyarihan, Randy Preysto, and AZTER Gee. The album was overall produced by StarPop label head Roque “Rox” Santos.
Beyond performing, the members were involved in developing the album’s music, visuals, concepts, and choreography. Gee wrote and solely composed three songs, while Kean, Laurence, Kiel, Tatin, Cray, other members, and their coaches contributed ideas to the choreography.
Leading the album is “Parang May Mali,” a song about feeling stuck in a familiar situation while holding on to hope that things will eventually change. The track immediately caught the members’ attention during their listening session, convincing them that it would be the ideal introduction to AZTER’s sound.
Through univerZity, AZTER aims to create music that grows beyond trends while encouraging young listeners to embrace their individuality, believe in themselves, and pursue their dreams.
