Following the success of her upbeat dance-pop track “Hot Maria Clara,” Kapuso actress and singer Sanya Lopez explores a more emotional sound with her new alternative pop single “Laro,” released under GMA Playlist and now available on major digital streaming platforms.
A departure from the empowerment-driven energy of her previous single, “Laro” explores situationships, unconditional love, and the painful realization of giving one’s heart to someone who may not be the right person.
“If ‘Hot Maria Clara’ was all about empowerment and a fun, danceable vibe, ‘Laro’ is more emotional. It’s about loving someone wholeheartedly, only to realize that you’re giving your heart to someone who wasn’t right for you,” Sanya shared.
The song came about organically while Sanya was recording a Japanese song for the primetime series “Pulang Araw.” During a break from the session, GMA Playlist executive Rocky Gacho discussed the possibility of another single with Sanya, who expressed her interest in creating a song about relationships and situationships that many listeners could relate to.
“At that time, I was recording a Japanese song for ‘Pulang Araw,’ and habang naka-standby ako, kinausap ako ni Ms. Rocky about doing another single,” Sanya recalled. “Sabi ko sa kanya, if ever gagawa ulit ako ng song, gusto ko sana about situationships or relationships that a lot of people can relate to.”
To bring the song’s emotional story to life, Sanya underwent vocal coaching before recording. She said the preparation helped her strengthen her voice and build confidence, while understanding the story behind the song allowed her to deliver its message more authentically.
“For me, it’s not just about hitting the notes; it’s about making people feel the message of the song,” Sanya said.
Through “Laro,” Sanya hopes to comfort listeners going through heartbreak and remind them that loving deeply is never something to be ashamed of.
“I hope this song reminds everyone that there’s nothing wrong with loving. There’s nothing wrong with giving your heart to someone, even if it didn’t work out. Hindi ibig sabihin na may kulang sa iyo. Sometimes, that experience is exactly what helps you grow into a stronger and better version of yourself,” she said.
