Director Lawrence “Law” Fajardo’s new sociopolitical drama “Silenced Nights” has been officially selected to compete in the Platform section of the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The selection marks a historic moment for Philippine cinema, making it the first Filipino film to enter TIFF’s main juried competition since the program was launched 11 years ago.
TIFF Platform, serving as the film festival’s competitive slate, highlights 12 global works chosen for their distinct directorial vision, innovation, and auteur voices. Apart from the CAD$20,000 prize, the winning non-English feature automatically secures a direct path for Best International Feature Film consideration at the 99th Academy Awards.
Written by Troy Espiritu and shot on location in Tondo’s Happyland, “Silenced Nights” centers on an ordinary laborer who witnesses the police kill a teenage boy. The story draws inspiration from the 2017 death of Kian delos Santos, a main turning point during the Philippine government’s war on drugs. Utilizing a raw cinema vérité style, the film captures pervasive fear, institutional silence, and the steep personal cost of seeking truth under an oppressive system.
“In recent years, I have immersed myself in commercial filmmaking. The experience has expanded my craft but often left me longing for the kind of narrative that first ignited my passion. Films that challenge, provoke, and speak truth to power,” executive producer Atty. Joji Alonso shared. “Silenced Nights marks my return to that realm – a deeply personal, socially grounded film that reconnects me to my roots in Independent Cinema,” she added.
The film features an ensemble cast including Nico Antonio, Lotlot de Leon, Ina Feleo, Tanya Gomez, Joel Saracho, Dylan Ray Talon, Simon Ibarra, Mario Magallona, Rom Factolerin, Soliman Cruz, Hector Macaso, Raul Morit, Bombi Plata, Apollo Abraham, DMs Boongaling, Mae Paner, Tess Jamias, Timothy Castillo, Kenken Nuyad, Micko Laurente, Enzo Osorio, Jorrybell Agoto, and Aquisha Tombiga, among others. Its central theme is captured by its slogan, “Where fear prevails, justice is silenced.”
Ferdy Lapuz and Patricia Sumagui are the film’s producers while Albert Banzon served as its director of photography. The project is an international co-production between Quantum Films (Philippines), House on Fire (France), and House on Fire International (Taiwan), created with support from the Film Development Council of the Philippines.
“Silenced Nights” will compete for top honors together with 11 other international titles: “Angh” (Theja Rio), “Brace Your Heart” (Amanda Kernell), “Children Untold” (Miwa Nishikawa), “Djinn Wedding” (Ferit Karahan), “Idda” (Irene Dionisio), “In the Heart of the South” (Nyla Innuksuk), “Masc” (Bertil Nilsson), “On Behalf of My Son” (Gabriel Martins), “The Smell of Apples” (John Trengove), “The World Before” (Yoon Dan-bi), and “Wild Wild East” (Jan Holoubek).
Deciding the winner will be a five-member jury chaired by Argentine filmmaker Pablo Trapero, with directors Amma Asante and Sylvia Chang, producer Luc Déry, and executive Albert Lee.
Ahead of its Toronto debut, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) granted an R-16 rating in the Philippines due to violent depictions, strong language, drug context, and mature thematic elements related to extrajudicial killings. Following its world premiere at TIFF, the film is set to open in Philippine theaters on September 16, 2026.
