Nearly five decades after its release, Miki Matsubara’s timeless City Pop anthem “Mayonaka no Door~stay with me” continues to captivate audiences around the world, officially surpassing 500 million cumulative streams on Spotify.

The milestone makes the 1979 hit only the 10th Japanese song to reach the half-billion streaming mark on the platform—and notably, the first Japanese song released in the 20th century to achieve the feat.

Originally released as Matsubara’s debut single, “Mayonaka no Door~stay with me” has found a remarkable second life through streaming platforms, social media, and a new generation of music fans. Fueled by digital-native listeners and growing international support, the song has become one of the defining tracks of the global City Pop resurgence, proving that great music can transcend both time and borders.

Its worldwide revival gained momentum in December 2020 when it topped Spotify’s Global Viral Chart for 18 consecutive days. Since then, the song has remained a fixture on international rankings, consistently appearing in the Top 10 of both the Billboard Global Japan Songs Excl. Japan chart and the GENIUS JAPAN INTERNATIONAL TOP10.

The song’s enduring popularity continues to earn industry recognition. For the second straight year, “Mayonaka no Door~stay with me” has been nominated for Best Japanese Song in Latin America at the Music Awards Japan 2026, highlighting its lasting impact on audiences beyond Japan.

Its influence has also extended to film and visual media, with licensing requests coming from productions in the United States, France, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Singapore, and other countries. As the track continues to appear in movies, videos, and digital content worldwide, “Mayonaka no Door~stay with me” stands as one of the most enduring and globally celebrated songs in Japanese music history.
