The Sandbox Collective has announced a strictly limited staged reading of Duncan Macmillan’s acclaimed play People, Places and Things, set to take place in August 2026. The production will be directed by The Sandbox Collective’s Artistic Director, Sab Jose.

Widely regarded as one of the most powerful contemporary plays of the last decade, People, Places and Things offers a gripping and unflinching exploration of addiction, recovery, identity, and the human desire for escape. The play follows an actress whose life begins to unravel as she confronts the realities of substance abuse and the difficult path toward healing.

Known for its emotional intensity and razor-sharp writing, Macmillan’s work places audiences inside a deeply personal journey that is at once devastating, funny, and profoundly moving. This intimate staged reading will foreground the play’s compelling text and complex characters, brought to life through Jose’s distinctive directorial approach.

“Since our inception, advocacy theatre has been at the heart of The Sandbox Collective’s identity,” said Jose. “Following our production of Spring Awakening earlier this year, People, Places and Things continues our commitment to bringing difficult yet necessary conversations to the stage and beyond. Through stories like these, we hope to foster understanding, expand awareness, and help normalize discussions around issues that affect so many lives.”

Details regarding the venue, cast, and ticket availability will be announced in the coming weeks.

People, Places and Things was first presented at the Dorfman Theatre, National Theatre London, in a co-production with Headlong on September 1, 2015.
