After receiving the Best Director and Best Actor awards at the 2013 Aliw Awards, veteran actor and producer Bart Guingona is returning to reprise his role as the famous abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko in the 2010 Tony Award-winning play, ‘Red’. The Necessary Theatre is bringing back ‘Red’ on stage at the PETA Theater Center on June 9-11, and 16-28 (Fridays at 8PM, and Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30PM and 8PM).
Joining Guingona in ‘Red’ is multi-talented actor JC Santos who is recently in the highly acclaimed series of ABS-CBN, ‘Dirty Linen’.
Santos will be playing the role of Ken, Rothko’s assistant.
‘Red’ is writted by American writer John Logan that won almost every major award in London when it premiered in 2009 and went on to do the same in New York the following year. This brilliant play, written by John Logan (known for his work on films such as ‘The Last Samurai,’ ‘Gladiator,’ and ‘Any Given Sunday’), speculates about one of the most enigmatic incidents in the art world of the 20th century.
It follows Mark Rothko’s who owns a studio in New York during the late 1958/59, and he is commissioned to paint a group of murals for the expensive and exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. His assistant, Ken, is helping him mixing the paints, making the frames, and preparing the canvases. Aside from following his boss’ requests, Ken however, questions Rothko’s theories of art and his acceding to work on such a commercial project. And Rothko dislikes the rise of pop art.
The play revolves in the argument between the two actors regarding their opinion about art and its deeper meaning.
Aside from the 2013 Aliw Awards, ‘Red’ also earned recognition from the Gawad Buhay 2013 including the Outstanding Production of an Existing Material for a Play, Outstanding Stage Direction Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Play, Outstanding Lighting Design, Outstanding Sound Design, Outstanding Set Design, Best Male Lead Performance in a Play, and Best Male Featured Performance in a Play (for Joaquin Valdes playing Ken in the 2013 production).
