>Working Girls returns to silver screen on April 21

>Since the sequel to the ‘80s sexy comedy classic “Working Girls” was announced, a lot of people who know about the iconic film have been curious if the new one can pack the same punch.

Considered one of the masterpieces of National Artist Ishmael Bernal, “Working Girls” so boldy mirrored the changing status and attitude of women then that moviegoers found themselves either identifying with its lead characters or they know real people who could relate.

This is the reason that GMA Films, Viva Films and Unitel, along with director Jose Javier Reyes, carefully selected who will play what in “Working Girls .”

As Direk Reyes puts it, “Coming up with a high-quality sequel is the least we can do to honor the legacy of Bernal and his film. ‘Working Girls’ was so ahead of its time that it even predated two Hollywood films of the same title that came out two and four years later.”

The actresses who were picked for plum roles in “Working Girls” are Ruffa Gutierrez, Eugene Domingo, Cristine Reyes, Eula Valdez, Iza Calzado, Jennelyn Mercado and Bianca King.

Ruffa plays Marilou, the beauty queen widow of a rich man forced to fight her way to find justice amid the hostile relatives of her late husband determined to cut her off completely from her inheritance.

Eugene is Paula who makes a living by selling items on the Internet. She’s hardworking, overly ambitious and perennially trying to keep up with the Joneses.

Eula tackles the role of celebrity cosmetic surgeon Dr. Cleo, who becomes the object of ire of the feminists.

Cristine is promo girl Wendy, who will do anything to hook a celebrity lawyer.

Iza essays the character, Tere, a nurse waiting for her summons to work for a hospital in Boston but ends up taking care of the dying wife of the man who hurt her most in the past

Jennelyn is Ada, an illegitimate daughter who ends up being a single mother herself. She works at a call center where she meets a man who could turn her life around if not for a hitch.

Bianca is the spoiled brat daughter who works as a segment producer in a TV company. She hates her stepmother so she devices ways to try and get rid of her.

Like the original characters in “Working Girls,” these ladies are empowered and strong-willed. They know what they want and, more importantly, how to get it.

Their lives not only intertwine with each other but even with characters from the first “Working Girls.” In “Working Girls ,” moviegoers will get updates on the lives of Suzanne Galang (Carmi Martin), Nimfa (Gina Pareno), Rose (Maribel Lopez) and Sabel (Rio Locsin) whose stories were last heard of 25 years ago.

“This movie is both for the fans of the original as well as those who want to get to know the new girls and their stories. So much has changed since 1984 that some of the things that were shown in the original film are no longer applicable. It’s a sequel and not a remake,” said Javier.

“Working Girls ” also stars Cherie Gil and Mylene Dizon. It is set for release on April 21.

>What happened in Copenhagen Summit last year?

>March 17, Crowne Plaza, Ortigas Center – In the Second Forum on Climate Change: A Post-Copenhagen Debriefing and Prognosis on the Way Forward, Bernarditas de Casto-Muller, senior negotiator on climate change and South Centre advisor, discussed what really happened on Copenhagen Summit last December 2009 that frustrates all environmentalists and advocates. According to the news, the summit that happened in Denmark was a failure, because there were no clear directions from the world leaders to lessen carbon emissions and other environmental hazards. The biggest disappointment though was that US President Barack Obama didn’t give any clear stand on the issue that developing countries are waiting.

According to Muller, in the 12th Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP 12) in Bali, Indonesia, there’s a comprehensive process to enable the full, effective and sustainable implementation of the Convention through a long-term cooperative action, now, up to beyond 2012, in order to reach an agreed outcome and adopt a decision at the fifteen session. This was indicated in the Bali Action Plan and the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. She mentioned that there were five key points/elements that summarized the idea of COP12: shared vision, mitigation, adaptation, technology development and transfer, and provision of financial resources. The ultimate objective of COP was stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate change. In the case of the Philippines, its meant to limit below 2 degrees Celsius temperature increase. Unfortunately, it is too late to prevent the 2 degree Celsius limit of increase. The only thing that we can do now is adaptation through the use of technology and proper financing for mitigation plans.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O4o_qB30E8&hl=en&fs=1]
According to Muller, the perceptions on COP 15 in Copenhagen, Denmark were:

* Had numerous routes and byways: G8/MEF; G20; bilateral meetings; “vulnerable countries”; the “circle commitment”; funded “consultants” of developing countries

* Waiting for the US

* Killing Kyoto?

* Developed countries stalling at negotiating tables

* Myth and message to media: “G77 is blocking the negotiations”

* Block negotiations and if everything else fails “Blame China”

According to Muller the reasons on the failure of Copenhagen were:

* A travesty of the intergovernmental process with no respect for the sovereign of States

* Exclusion of Parties: Climate change affects all countries, and most of all, poor, developing countries: given one hour to decide their future

* No transparency of procedures

* Made a parody of negotiations

* Ministers, & in particular Presidents, do not negotiate

* Nobody can act for all countries but only their own

The COP decision to “take note of” of the accord:

* Recognizes “scientific view” of limit of temperature increase below 2 C

* Only “pledge and review” of emissions reductions for the developed countries

* Disconnect between pledges and achievement of “scientific view”

* Denial of historical responsibilities means denial of commitments on financing and technology, the hey to the balance of common but differentiated responsibilities

(The objective of COP15)

The implications of the Copenhagen Accord to the developing countries showed that there was no clarity between supported and enabled nationally-appropriated mitigation actions. It also showed that financing has unclear procedures for its allotment and disbursement, and according to Muller financing is not new, not sure and not even be there.

Muller strongly claimed that the developing countries are experiencing the effect of climate change and also the developed countries. In the case of COP, it is hard for a leader to decide for the whole world because he or she can only speak for his or her country and that is the dilemma in COP. However, Muller remained is positive for the COP16 at the Cancun, Mexico on November 29 to December 10, 2010 which would continue to undermine the inter-governmental process and work out agreements at the bilateral, regional, or issue-focused meetings to strengthen the accord on adaptation, mitigation, financing and technology transfer. Climate Change falls on the category of United Nation Millennium Developmental Goal # 7: Environmental Sustainability.

>March 15, EDSA Shangri-la Plaza, Pasig City – DP Pure Environment Inc., introduces an alternative way to convert trash to fertilizer that will help to Philippines in solving its problem in garbage. According to J.M. Lee, CEO of DP Pure Environment Inc they will be building a factory in Lima, Batangas that will collect garbage in Metro Manila and convert it to water-free fertilizer. With an initial budget of 12 Million Dollars the project will be fully operated with 6-7 months.

“Every kind of waste produced, even glass with its hexagonal molecular structure, can be broken down into organic fertilizer.”, this was the assurance of Lee during the press conference of DP Pure Environment, Inc. where 50 percent of the garbage will be converted to organic fertilizer and the remaining 50 percent will gone during the process. After exhaustive research and testing in Korea for the past twenty years, Lee opted to bring the technology to the Philippines. “The obvious choice for many people would have been China, due to its proximity and large population,” he admitted, “but I wanted to come to the Philippines because the investment climate and general atmosphere is quite appealing to the group.” Aside the Philippines, the said project were implemented in Korea and China, while some of fertilizers were exported and used in Japan.

Lee lives in the Philippines for almost 5 years where he believes that it is proper to implement this project as an exchange to the hospitality that he receives in the country. He chooses Batangas as an initial venue for the project because of the reason it is not over crowded unlike in any part of the Metro Manila.

In regards with the finish product – fertilizers, Lee assures that it is chemical-free and safe to handle, unlike many existing fertilizers currently on the market. “Our fertilizer has been extensively tested on farmland and staple crops such as rice and the results have been nothing but positive. Fertility of tested crops increased as much as 3%.” Lee claims. He is looking forward that their efforts will be acknowledge by the government as alternative way to lessen garbage and favorable for farmers who is in need for safe fertilizers. Part of the finish products will be exported in other countries and the remaining will be donated in local farmers in Batangas.

DP Pure Environment Inc., is a local subsidiary of DAEPOONG Fertilizer Co., Ltd of the DAEPOONG Industries Korean conglomerate, has begun the process of accreditation in the Philippines and is well on its way to becoming a fully-operational waste treatment facility that revolutionizes pre-existing waste management processes.
