In line with the traffic problem that most of the commuters and vehicle owners experience everyday in most of the main roads in Metro Manila and most especially in EDSA whether it is morning, afternoon or evening, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is currently proposing the four-digit coding system to address this problem. Currently there’s the two-digit coding system that’s implemented by the MMDA; vehicles whose plate numbers in 1 and 2 cannot be brought out on streets on Mondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays, 7 and 8 on Thursdays and 9 and 0 on Fridays where there’s no coding scheme on weekends.

With the new four-digit coding system, MMDA proposes that vehicles whose plate numbers ending on 1, 2, 3 and 4 cannot be brought out on streets on Mondays, 5, 6, 7 and 8 on Tuesdays, 9, 0, 1 and 2 on Wednesdays, 3, 4, 5 and 6 on Thursdays and 7, 8, 9 and 0 on Fridays. No coding scheme will be implemented on weekends still. With the proposed four-digit coding system will have vehicles owner not to bring their vehicles in the road twice a week.

According to MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, the said four-digit coding system will be presented on July 24 to the meeting of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) which will depend on the approval of all the mayors of Metro Manila. Still with the four-digit coding system Tolentino stresses that they’re still thinking if it will be Metro Manila wide or just in EDSA for implementation if the new scheme pushes through. He also mentioned that the said scheme was implemented in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil that addresses the traffic congestion in the city. Statistics says that there are around 2.2 million vehicles passes on major roads of Metro Manila and in EDSA alone there are more than 320, 000 vehicles everyday.
