Why exploring Europe by sea is the ultimate way to travel

While Europe’s peak travel months grow increasingly crowded and costly, Norwegian Cruise Line® (NCL) is offering travelers a smarter, more immersive way to explore the continent, one that combines more freedom and flexibility, easy access to bucket-list destination across the continent, and surprising value.

As the Middle East’s Leading Cruise Line for three years running, NCL is seeing a growing number of GCC travelers looking beyond the traditional summer holiday and opting for Europe’s shoulder seasons – spring and early autumn – to enjoy a more relaxed, authentic pace of travel. These off-peak months offer milder weather, fewer crowds, and a more serene atmosphere in Europe’s most iconic cities, allowing guests to enjoy longer days in port and deeper cultural connections without the summer rush.

From the sun-soaked shores of the Mediterranean to the dramatic coastlines of Northern Europe, NCL’s immersive European itineraries offer an effortless way to explore the continent’s most iconic destinations — including Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Turkey, Norway, Iceland and beyond. In 2025 and 2026, NCL will offer over 160 shoulder season voyages visiting ports across the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, and the British Isles. These 7- to 15-day cruises provide flexibility with multiple departure points such as Athens (Piraeus), Greece; Barcelona, Spain; Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy and Lisbon, Portugal, and feature longer port stays — including overnights in sought-after cities like Istanbul —giving guests ample time to discover both world-famous landmarks and hidden local gems, all without the hassle of packing and unpacking between stops. Select ports, such as Livorno, serve as gateways to Tuscany, charming hill towns, and the region’s picturesque countryside.

The “More” Approach to Cruising Europe
At the heart of NCL’s offering is a simple promise: Deliver more opportunities to guests to create their most individual vacation experience.

  • More space and freedom onboard– From spa mornings and al fresco lunches to go-kart tracks and water slides, the experience is as calm or energetic as guests choose.
  • More flavour and flair– Think modern global dining with multiple elevated offerings, no fixed schedules, and some of the best entertainment and live music at sea.
  • More time in port– Because lingering in Santorini at golden hour is far better than rushing back to a bus.
  • More built-in value– With the new More At Sea™ upgrade, guests can access specialty dining, high-speed Wi-Fi powered by Starlink, unlimited open bar packages and more, all bundled in.

For those looking to experience Europe in the quieter, yet vibrant, shoulder seasons, NCL offers a wealth of choice for both 2025 and 2026. For autumn 2025, experience the charm of the Mediterranean with itineraries exploring the Greek Isles, Italy, and Croatia, enjoying pleasant weather and fewer crowds as the season transitions.  Looking ahead to spring/early summer 2026, consider the Norwegian Pearl’s Greek Isles voyages, sailing from May through August between Venice (Ravenna) and Athens (Piraeus), offering island-hopping through picturesque Santorini and Mykonos. Alternatively, discover Northern Europe with Norwegian Star’s 10- or 11-day Iceland and Norway itineraries, departing from Southampton in May and June 2026, perfect for immersing in dramatic landscapes without the peak summer crowds. These cruises are designed for travelers who seek deep cultural engagement and stunning scenery without the complexities of multi-city hotel changes.
