After two critically acclaimed sold-out runs in 2023, The Sandbox Collective is set to restage “Bawat Bonggang Bagay” from June 22-30, 2024 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater, Makati City, Metro Manila. This production, which stars the multifaceted artist and comedy icon Jon Santos, has resonated deeply with Filipino audiences. “Bawat Bonggang Bagay,” a Filipino translation of Duncan Macmillan’s interactive one-man play “Every Brilliant Thing,” has established more personal and nuanced connections through its new translation, capturing the hearts of many.
Jon Santos’s portrayal has been pivotal in placing the show’s discussions of mental health and sexuality firmly in a local context. His performance has been widely praised, with the show becoming an immediate hit for its deft handling of topics often considered taboo in Filipino culture. The translation by Guelan Luarca, first staged as part of Sandbox Fest 2023, garnered significant recognition, including a nomination for Best Play at the 2023 BroadwayWorld Philippines Awards and a Best Actor nomination for Santos. The limited rerun in September 2023 saw six sold-out performances, cementing the play’s success.
Due to the overwhelming clamor and acclaim from its initial runs, “Bawat Bonggang Bagay” will return as a special Pride Month staging. This production is under The Sandbox Collective’s new special projects unit, The Sandbox Co. Labs. The 2024 rerun will be staged in a proscenium-style theater, marking a departure from the play’s previous homes in smaller spaces. However, the show will retain its intimate, interactive nature by placing the audience in-the-round and onstage with Santos, ensuring the connection between performer and audience remains strong.
Director Jenny Jamora will once again lead the production, bringing her expertise and vision to this celebrated play. The collaboration between Jamora and Santos has been a key factor in the play’s success, with their combined efforts creating a performance that is both engaging and thought-provoking.
