Through a tripartite agreement between the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), the construction of the new Philippine Film Heritage Building in Intramuros, Manila will officially commence through a groundbreaking ceremony on October 26, 2023.

Agency heads DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, FDCP Chairman and CEO Tirso Cruz III, and TIEZA Chief Operating Officer Mark Lapid signed the inter-agency memorandum which greenlighted the building’s construction last September 26.

“This Tripartite Agreement between our esteemed agencies is a testament to our collective dedication to safeguard and nurture our beloved Philippine Film Heritage,” said Chairman Cruz.

This landmark agreement is a significant step towards preserving and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Philippine cinema, highlighting the involved government agencies’ commitment to the development of the country’s film and tourism industries.

Envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility, the soon-to-rise building will be a melting pot of cinematic gems, including a collection of Filipino films, memorabilia, and audiovisual preservation and restoration facilities.

“Our facilities will serve as a hub for film enthusiasts, a source of deep & rich knowledge for students, and a treasure trove of Philippine cinema for both our fellow citizens and visitors from all around the world,” Chairman Cruz added.

In a statement, the DOT said that the building is expected to become a key attraction within the historic walled city of Intramuros, offering visitors an immersive journey through the evolution of Philippine cinema.

The construction of the Philippine Film Heritage Building is part of the government’s broader efforts to boost tourism and cultural appreciation in the country. It is expected to be completed in October 2024.

“I would like to extend my deepest appreciation to each and every one of our supporters who contributed in making our dream of establishing a permanent home for our Philippine Film Heritage a reality. Most especially to the Honorable Senator Robin Padilla, the main proponent of this monumental project. This feat will not be possible without your support. We send our gratitude to you all,” Chairman Cruz said in a statement.

Once erected, the Philippine Film Heritage Building will house the Cinematheque Centre Manila and the Philippine Film Archive. It will also be the new headquarters of the FDCP.
