Dual Camera Smart Phone Battery Performance

The Dual Camera Set- Up, a trend that’s starting to dominate the smart phone industry, got the attention and curiosity of our Gizguide team. However, as exciting, and powerful and trendy as the feature may seem, let’s be real, is their phone battery good enough to withstand their picture taking quality?

The team decided to compare the two giants of camera phones, namely, the Apple iPhone7 plus and the Huawei P9 plus. By devising a simple battery drain test, in which we played and looped a 1080p video on both phones on airplane mode, with headphones on overnight, we were able to observe the phones’ battery life. After 9 hours of conducting the said test, Apple’s iPhone 7 plus lasted 9 hours with 9% battery left to spare, while the Huawei P9 plus has 12% of battery life remaining.

Let’s make a brief introduction on both phone’s battery capacity, Apple’s iPhone 7 plus houses a 2900mAh battery capacity, which is relatively smaller, in comparison to its competitor, Huawei P9 plus, which boasts a battery capacity of 3450mAh.

Both phones have their own battery saving feature. Apple’s iPhone 7 has a low power mode that reduces the background processes and animations to save its battery’s power. Huawei on the other hand, has an array of battery power saving modes like the ROG mode; it reduces the screen resolution from 1080 FHD to 720 HD, and it also reduces background processes to save power. Another battery saving feature of Huawei P9 is its Ultra Power Saving mode, which lets you extend the battery life even further.

With this in mind, its obvious that even though the iPhone contains a smaller battery capacity, its efficiency is proof that it can be at par with the Huawei P9 plus’ battery life amidst all the battery saving features both phones support.

So, is it the iPhone? Or P9? It’s clear that both phones have proven their batteries can keep up with the demand of usage. Either of the two options, you are sure to get the value for your money.

Tell us what you think! Would you like us to conduct more tests? If so, we are open for comments and suggestions.

Huawei Battles with Samsung in Patent Infringement Wars

Competition within the mobile industry is definitely intense. As such, smartphone brands have patents over their designs and whoever uses those patents without permission will legal complaints. For one, the world’s No.1 and No.3 smartphone makers, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd with 22.3% market share and Huawei Technologies Co Ltd with 8.9% market share, went against each other for a patent showdown.

In May 2016, Samsung encountered their first major legal challenge from their Chinese competitor, Huawei. Huawei sued Samsung for infringing 11 of its patents on operating systems, user interface software and 4G cellular-communication technology. Huawei sued its South Korean rival in California and Shenzhen, which are the largest markets of smartphones for Samsung. In the lawsuit, Huawei stated that “Samsung and its affiliates have earned billions of dollars by selling products that use Huawei’s technology.”

Ding Jianxing, Huawei’s president of intellectual property rights, said, “Thus far, we have signed cross-licensing agreements with dozens of our competitors. We hope Samsung will respect Huawei’s R&D investment and patents, stop infringing our patents and get the necessary license from Huawei, and work together with Huawei to jointly drive the industry forward.”

Following July 2016, Samsung filed a countersuit against Huawei for infringing 6 of their patents and claiming 161 million yuan ($24.14 million) in damages. Furthermore, they asked to stop production and sales of some products. Samsung mentioned in a statement, “Despite our best efforts to resolve this matter amicably, it has regrettably become necessary to take legal action in order to defend our intellectual property.” To which Huawei’s spokesperson responded that they haven’t received a formal complaint regarding the matter. However, “we will review any documentation and defend ourselves as appropriate when we do.”

As a result, more tech companies are investing more in research and development of their other offerings that cater to enterprises and other consumer groups. For instance, Huawei is investing more than $9B in R&D in its consumer unit alone, even outdoing Apple by more than a billion every year. With the increasing cautionary practices for patent infringement in the industry, Huawei and more brands are keeping a closer eye on developing more innovative solutions and technologies outside the consumer group to get the leg up in intellectual property claims.

Battle of Dual Lens Cameras : iPhone 7 or Huawei P9

The dual camera is the new battlefield for all smartphones today. A trend which started five years ago, this movement in mobile technology is quickly gaining pace as some of the biggest names in the smartphone arena are adapting this innovation.

Chinese smartphone brand Huawei launched the P9 and P9 Plus, the frontliners of its mobile phone high-end line. Both units boast of a high-powered dual lens camera co-engineered with renowned German camera manufacturer, Leica. These dual cameras are equipped with 12MP sensors, RBG and monochromewith f/2.2 aperture that are built to work in tandem to enhance details for professional quality photos.

Months later, Apple launched its highly anticipated iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in September. Unlike its Huawei competitor, Apple only made the dual lens feature available in its iPhone 7 Plus model. Apple iPhone 7 Plus is also equipped with 12MP lenses, with one lens as wide angle and the other as a telephoto lens (2x zoom). The two lenses have f/1.8 and f/2.8 aperture, respectively.

The two smartphones seem to be in equal footing when it comes to clarity of details and overall quality of output. Nonetheless, each has its own highlights and strengths that cater to the photo savvy mobile phone user. For instance, Huawei P9 is known to be the go-to smartphone camera for taking dramatic, night cityscape shots with its low-light and bokeh photo effects, as well as its dedicated monochrome lens for crisp black and white shots. Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 Plus comes in handy in perfecting those medium shots with its 2x optical zoom enabled by the additional telephoto lens.

With their own highlight features and distinct functions, there is no clear winner in the duel between iPhone 7 Plus and Huawei P9. As seen above, iPhone 7 Plus performs better in tighter and more focused shots due to its  post-simulation feature, which processes images in place more than the ordinary lens. On the other hand, Huawei P9 proves to be ideal for taking photos with more vivid color representationbecause of its P9 can stimulating capacity of flare effects and focus.

As these big players in the smartphone industry continue to set the pace in the dual camera arena, other mobile brands are foreseen to follow suit. Apple and Huawei have currently set the standards for dual camera technology, but as the competition heats up in this field, other players are anticipated to join in the trend with their own offerings in the next few years.
