Maleficent earns Php 179.9-M in just 5 days!

The spin-off movie of the all-time-favorite fairytale story of Sleeping Beauty – Maleficent, magically paves its way as this year’s second-biggest in terms of opening gross where it earned Php 179.9-M in just 5 days. This is base from the announcement given by the local office of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International, the film’s distributor where it ranked second after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Php 251-M) and higher than X-Men: Days of Future Past (Php 175-M).

Up to date the film that stars award winning actress and humanitarian Angelina Jolie opened tremendously huge that it already surpassed the lifetime revenues of Disney’s biggest non-Marvel titles, namely Prince of Persia (Php 156-M), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Php 155-M) and Alice in Wonderland (Php 140-M). Disney owes the power of positive word-of-mouth from audiences that made that earning possible.

Meanwhile, in the filmography of Jolie it is the Biggest Opening Weekend for an Angelina Jolie Live-Action Movie Ever, likewise smashing the lifetime grosses of Salt (Php 131-M), Wanted (Php 95-M) and Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Php 83-M).

In terms of ticket sales breakdown, top 5 cinema contributors include SM North EDSA with Php 8.41-M, followed closely by SM Mall of Asia (Php 8.29-M), SM Megamall (Php 8.06-M), SM Cebu (Php 7.09-M) and Trinoma (Php 6.19-M.). And completing the ticket sales big contributors are Newport City (Php 3.33-M), Eastwood (Php 3.05-M), SM Southmall (Php 2.97-M), Power Plant (Php 2.96-M), Greenbelt 3 (Php 2.85-M), Greenhills Promenade (Php 2.82-M), SM Fairview (Php 2.57-M), Gateway (Php 2.56-M), SM Clark (Php 2.49-M) and Market! Market! (Php 2.48-M).

Maleficent is a spin-off fairytale movie of Disney where it centers to the iconic villain with the same name. It shows the back story of the character presenting on how her heart filled with love became a heart of stone. Driven by revenge and a fierce desire to protect the moors over which she presides, Maleficent cruelly places an irrevocable curse upon the human king’s newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Aurora is caught in the middle of the seething conflict between the forest kingdom she has grown to love and the human kingdom that holds her legacy. Maleficent realizes that Aurora may hold the key to peace in the land and is forced to take drastic actions that will change both worlds forever.

The film stars Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville. It is currently showing here in the Philippines in 3D, 2D, MAX 3D and 4DX formats; Maleficent is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.
