From a comic book published by Marvel Comics in 1962, Thor finally arrives in the big screen through the production of Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures. Luckily the super hero film was released earlier here in the Philippines (April 29) through Summit Entertainment, which was few days early than the US premiere (May 6). The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and Stellan Skarsgård and directed by Kenneth Branagh.

The movie follows the journey of Thor (Hemsworth), a Norse deity who was banished in the human world because of being arrogant and reckless after breaking the rule of his father Odin (Hopkins). Stripped off with his immortality and his Mjolnir, the hammer which is Thor’s source of power he met Jane Foster (Portman), a scientist investigating several phenomena happening in the sky of New Mexico. Having the same dilemma like Thor, Foster’s equipments were confiscated by S.H.E.I.L.D, they work together to retrieve what was taken away from them. From his exile, Thor’s brother Loki (Hiddleston) assumes power after their father falls into the Odinsleep – a prolonged period of deep sleep to recuperate. But instead of telling the truth Loki, lied to Thor telling that their father died and making him blame himself for what happen. Finally, Thor discovered that Loki lied and he returned to Asgard to save his parents in the hand of his brother.

The phasing of the story in the movie was fast. For a viewer who just came few minutes late he or she will surely lost the grasp in the story, especially those I doesn’t have idea about the comic book. The film focuses much on the visual effects and fight scenes which is almost three-fourths of movie. It lacks on establishment of the characters, which film adaptation needs a refresher for the younger audience who is either new followers of Thor.

Putting aside the storyline, visually the film is amazing; the graphics is sharp and crisp. It gives a good representation of Asgard which is modern with a futuristic feel. At first, I was doubtful of Hemsworth to do Thor’s role but seeing the film he is fit for the character along with Hiddleston who played Loki. As always, aside from her strong character as Jane Foster, Natalie Portman remains beautiful as ever hoping to see her in The Avengers movie soon.

Thor is now showing in all cinemas nationwide and available on 3D, IMAX 3D and regular format. The film was distributed by Summit Entertainment nationwide.
