Anthony Hopkins did a great job in portraying his role in The Rite. Warner Bros Pictures gave a new twist to the usual exorcism-demon movie and it was brilliant. The film was directed by Mikael Hafstrom and based on Matt Baglio’s The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist. Starring Anthony Hopkins and Colin O’Donoghue, the horror movie will be showing in all cinemas beginning February 2.

The Rite gives a twist from the usual exorcism movie that shows a priest and a person possessed by the demon. I don’t want to give to much spoiler but one thing for sure it gives another conflict and storyline that horror movie aficionados will enjoy. But to be honest the movie lacks with establishing the characters and the conflict. The movie jumped from a short intro, conflict and later resolution. We end up asking who were the demons that Father Lucas (Hopkins) was dealing with.

But for those who were used with the exorcism movie, they don’t need that much establishment of the conflict and characters. instead they want to see the process and the twist if there’s any. I want to stick to my first statement that the movie was brilliant in terms of creating an alternative concept of the common exorcism movie.

In terms of visuals, the movie lessen the use of visual effects and sticks with make ups and facial expressions. It may be an old strategy but making it natural and simple it preserves and maintain the creep among the viewers
.

Lastly, Anthony Hopkins is Anthony Hopkins, no one will doubt his credibility in acting especially with suspense and horror. We feared him in Hannibal and now he did a great job as Father Lucas. He’s performance as a hero, villain and victim in the story challenges and triggers the conflict with Colin’s character and created a wonderful chemistry.

The Rite will be showing in all cinemas nationwide beginning February 2.
