Finally it’s here in the Philippines; the controversial yet touching feel good movie of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway is now showing in all cinemas nationwide. Love & Other Drugs is a comedy-drama film is directed by Edward Zwick was based from the non-fiction book of Jamie Reidy entitled Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman.
The movie follows story of Jamie Randall (Gyllenhaal) and Maggie Murdock (Hathaway), whom by fate, lust, love and in search for remedy crossed path and found themselves falling for each other. Randall is a medical representative from Pfizer who tries to convince Dr. Knight (Hank Azaria) to prescribe Zoloft instead of Prozac to his patients. Dr. Knight was Murdock’s doctor; she’s suffering from early onset Parkinson’s disease. Jamie used his charms to get Maggie without knowing what was the current state of girl’s health, but later it was more than sex, it was love, but complications goes with it.
Love & Other Drugs is a feel-good romance-comedy movie, and yes it’s enticing to watch because of premise and the skins shown by the lead actors in the film. But beyond the skin and sex which was the selling point of the movie, there was a deeper concern in the story and that is acceptance. I don’t want to be cheesy but that’s how I see the movie, it gives the viewers see how love grew between two opposite people with a complication on the side.
The movie opens the mind of the viewers on the issue of Parkinson’s disease, which is the premise of the story on how to love and accepts a person who has it. I don’t want to be too much of a spoiler but Wikipedia already gave some information that really spoils the movie a lot. The Chicago scene is the most important thing that the viewers should not missed on where Maggie connects and sees the light on how she will continue her life, but at the same time it starts the complications in the life of Jamie. It gives reality about the disease in the movie, no miracles or twist included, but pure real situations and that is the reason I enjoyed the movie.
As for the technical side, the way scenes and shots was taken, it gives the viewers to follow the lives of Maggie and Jaime in second person perspective. I mentioned this one in my Hereafter review, the angles along with the shots gives the viewers to peak and follow their story including their love making of course. The texture is not that vibrant, instead the atmosphere of the movie shows how tough and sad Love & Other Drugs was, its complicated that’s why it should not bright and glossy unlike other romantic or comedy movie or both should be.
Love & Other Drugs is now showing in all cinemas nationwide and it was distributed by 20th Century Fox.
