From November 18 to December 4, Spotlight Artists Centre brings Nestor Torre and Gines Tan’s Magsimula Ka at the Music Museum, bringing back the golden years of OPM music. The musical play features new and veteran performers like Ciara Sotto, Myke Salomon, Poppert Bernadas, Fred Lo and Kyla Rivera, ably supported by theater luminaries Ana Feleo, Tricia Amper-Jimenez, Sherwin Sozon, Sheng Belmonte, Gerald Napoles, Sophiea Reyes, Cheeno Macaraig, Rafael Sudayan, Ava Santos, Kakki Teodoro, Heidi Arima, Carlos Canlas, Pamela Imperial and Migs Ramirez.

Magsimula Ka was originally staged at the CCP Little Theater in the 80’s. The musical play follows the lives of three individuals who wanted to fulfill their dreams to be a singer and music composer. That dream came in after graduation and they tried their luck in the Philipop, a local singing and composing competition who awards new OPM performers.

It was great to see the masterpiece of Nestor Torre and Gines Tan on stage, and reaching out to the younger audience. I was hoping that the younger crowd will appreciate Magsimula Ka and give way as an inspiration on bringing back the Philippine music industry back on its high years. As for the characters, Ciara Sotto, Myke Salomon, Poppert Bernadas, Fred Lo and Sheng Belmonte they did great on stage.

Nestor Torre and Gines Tan’s Magsimula Ka will run on November 18, 19, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27, and December 2, 3 and 4, 8:00 p.m., with matinees on November 20, 27 and December 4 at the Music Museum. It is directed by Robert Seña. The musical play was produced by Isay Alvarez-Seña, Tricia Amper-Jimenez and Carl Balita, with Boni Juan, set designer; Georcelle Dapat, choreographer; JonJon Villareal, lighting design and Krina Cayabyab, vocal coach.
