Once again, the Filipinos showed optimism and strength of character in a year full of challenges and debacles. No matter how tough life got in 2009 with the economic crisis and the slew of calamities, they have remained hopeful and they continue to fight.

Join Bernadette Sembrano as she looks back on the stories of Filipinos who embodied the never-say-attitude this country is known for this Tuesday (Dec 29) on “The Correspondents.”

After being laid off from work, Domina continues to fight by finding another job despite her old age. Soledad, meanwhile, put up a small eatery to provide for her grandchildren after their home was destroyed by Typhoon Ondoy.

Like them, cancer patient Fe remains hopeful about the future. She is looking forward to getting cured with the help of fellow Filipinos who will support her trip to Fuda Cancer Hospital in China, the so-called “mecca” of cancer patients. On the other hand, working student Carmelo does not mind the stress of juggling his studies and work as he is focused on getting his family out of poverty.

They have proven that Filipinos never back down despite the trials that life bring. They have made 2009 a year to showcase Filipinos’ fighting spirit.

Education for the Election

Hopes on Morality and on 2010 Election

Kasama sa MFM sina Ambassador Henrietta T. De Villa (Chairperson of the National Movement for Free Election or NAMFREL, Chairperson rin ng Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting or PPCRV at dating Ambassador sa Vatican), Dr. Mildwida Guevarra (Former Undersecretary of Finance, Chairperson of Movement for Good Governance and of Synergia (educational reform) Foundation, and 2008 Gawad Haydee Yorac Awardee), Msgr. Gerardo O. Santos, Ed. D. (President of the Catholic Education Association of the Philippines or CEAP, Executive Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines or CBCP, and Episcopal Commision on Cathechesis and Catholic Education), Retired Brigade General Jaime C Echeverria (President of the Association of Generals and Flag Officers), Bishop Ernesto P. Nacpil (Retired Bishop of the United Methodist Church of the Philippines), Ms. Marixi Rufino Prieto (Chairperson of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and Trustee of the Metrobank Foundation), Attorney Andres D. Bautista (Chairman of the Philippine Association of Law Schools, Dean of the Far Eastern University Institute of Law, and columnist of the Philippine Star) and Noorian S. Sabdulla (Moslem youth, 2008 Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines Awardee).

Last August 14 at the special screening of The Last Journey of Ninoy at the Rockwell Cinema at Power Plant Mall, nagkaroon tayo ng maikling conversation with Rafael Lopa the Executive Director of Benigno S. Aquino Jr. Foundation (BSAF) kasama si Cesar Buenaventura ang President ng BSAF para kamustahin ang mga future plans nila sa foundation at paano nila matutulungan ang ating mga kababayan.

While thousands of Filipinos braved the rain, millions were glued to their televisions, radios, and computers as ABS-CBN pulled off a regal and stately reportage of the late former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino’s funeral last week.

Those who stayed at home watched it on ABS-CBN Channel 2 and Studio 23. Those with cable tuned to ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) and DZMM TeleRadyo. Those driving listened to DZMM Radyo Patrol 630, while those in the office relied on the live streaming at abs-cbnnews.com. Filipinos overseas, meanwhile, watched it from TFC and TFCNow!

Dubbed “Salamat, President Cory,” the coverage maximized ABS-CBN’s multimedia platform to keep Filipinos worldwide informed on the turn of events – from Sen. Noynoy Aquino’s heartbreaking announcement of President Cory’s death, to the gripping funeral processions which drew crowds to the streets, to the tearful tributes of family and friends.

It marked the first time in Philippine history that a president’s death was given a full-scale media coverage.

One of the most unforgettable parts of “Salamat, President Cory” was the arrival of the late former President’s body at the Manila Cathedral, and the necrological and liturgical services which followed it two days after.

The ABS-CBN game show unit, led by premier director Bobet Vidanes and business unit head for game shows Marilou “Alou” Almaden, took charge of the coverage at this point. Kris Aquino, Cory’s daughter and the station’s game show queen, personally requested Bobet to direct the services. Bobet, in turn, requested his game show team to be with him in this project.

“I work with this team day in and day out. They know my expectations. They have my trust. With them, everything is like automatic,” he said.

According to Alou, putting up the coverage was as hard physically as it was emotionally. Before the body arrived at the famous church last August 3, they only had less than 24 hours of setting up 70 moving lights and 17 cameras all over the Cathedral.
“We could only set up in bursts. There were weddings scheduled and we did not want to disrupt the normal routine of the Church,” the accomplished TV executive said.

Bobet, on the other hand, recounted how they would pray in the church for the rain to stop, as it was making the setup more complicated. However, despite all the production and logistic setbacks, they never lost focus on why they were there.

“Our only intention was to give Madame Cory the moment she deserves. Like I told Kris when she asked me to do the coverage, no matter what happens, I will drop everything and do my best for her, and for my president.

By best, he meant coming up with amazing lighting, cinematic angles, and perfectly-timed montage of shots. He made sure the solemnity of the event would not be lost, even during the performances of top singers like Lea Salonga, Regine Velasquez, Martin Nievera, Sarah Geronimo, Dulce, Ogie Alcasid, Eric Santos, Jed Maddela, Zsazsa Padilla, APO Hiking Society, Ivy Violan, Kuh Ledesma, Aiza Seguerra, Rachel Ann Go, Christian Bautista, Jose Mari Chan who were chosen by the Aquino family to take part in the memorial.

It was, after all, a very personal task for him. “Madame Cory was already special to me even before I got to work with Kris. I was able to serve her as a trainee of Radio-Television Malacañang back in 1987 and she was very gracious to me as she was to everybody,” he explained.

Bobet said it wasn’t hard to make his team feel as involved in the task as he was, even those who weren’t alive yet during President Cory’s term. “I just told them this is our last chance to say thank you and goodbye to the woman who brought freedom and democracy back to the country.”

Alou added it was also a chance to be part of history. “Our work will be seen by generations and generations after. It wasn’t just any funeral that we took part in, it was the funeral of one of the most beloved Filipinos and one of the most admired people in the world.”

With both experience and passion, this ABS-CBN team was able to pull off a coverage which revealed not only how the Filipino loved President Aquino but also highlighted the beauty of the Manila Cathedral. Most importantly, they were able to keep it solemn and meaningful for the viewers and the Aquino family.

Likewise, other ABS-CBN units also went the extra mile to come up with a world-class coverage that every Filipino will be proud. Under the leadership and overseeing of ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio and Channel 2 head Cory Vidanes, the whole ABS-CBN team churned in real-time news updates, exclusive interviews and breathtaking footage.

Viewers and listeners have imparted their praises on the coverage in different circles around the world, including social-networking sites. By pushing the limits and going beyond borders, ABS-CBN indeed delivered a coverage fit for a Filipino hero.

ABS-CBN chairman and chief executive officer Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III also thanked the men and women of ABS-CBN. “Covering the death of a beloved president, I am sure, was emotionally draining for most of us. However for one shining moment we remembered the best in all of us as exemplified by President Cory. It made me proud to be a Kapamilya, and an even prouder Filipino.”

Send your message and prayers to President Corazon Aquino’s family and friends on http://coryaquino.abs-cbnnews.com/guestbook.

The Philippine International Marathon 2009, A Run for the Pasig River goes to the starting line on November 8, 2009 at the Quirino Grandstand, Rizal Park, Manila.

Organized by Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) and under the helm of race director Rudy Biscocho, the run with categories in 3 kilometer, 5 kilometer, 10 kilometer and the full 42 kilometer marathon, aims to boost awareness about the project as well as raise funds to rehabilitate the Pasig River. A unique feature of the race is the 42K full marathon which can also be run by a relay team of 20 people.

The route has been crafted to provide the public a glimpse of the state of the river as well as challenge marathoners with its non-traditional route crossing nine of the thirteen bridges of the Pasig River, and with portions to be run alongside the river. Gunstart for the full marathon is at 4:30 a.m.

Gina Lopez, Managing Director of ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. one of the lead partners of KBPIP called on the public to show their support for the multi-sectoral effort to save the Pasig River: “The marathon is a step of faith. Together we can go the distance and clean the river.”

The Philippine International Marathon was established in 2000 by the Clean & Green Foundation headed by First Lady Mrs. Ming Ramos. In 2008, the Clean & Green Foundation passed the torch of reviving the Pasig River to ABS-CBN Foundation along with it the task of organizing the marathon as a fund-raiser for the effort.

The run is open to the public with a participation fee of P250. Corporate groups may also register as a team.

Free Running clinics will be made available for first time runners through the Pinoy Ultra Runners which is supporting the marathon.

Pre-registration forms are available at the Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig office at the 3/F ELJ Building. Interested participants may also call: 415-2272 loc. 3797, 416-1911 or email ilogpasig@abs-cbn.com.

AFI and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission signed a Memorandum of Agreement last March 2008 to co-manage the rehabilitation of the Metro Manila river basin, with initial focus on Pasig River and its tributaries. This gave birth to Kapit Bisig para sa Ilog Pasig, which was formally launched in February 2009.

Paalam Tita Cory.

Before the clock strikes at 4PM, on July 27, 2009 where classes in all level is suspended in Metro Manila because of the 2 events happening on that day, 95th Anniversary of Iglesia Ni Cristo and the last or the 9th State of the Nation of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. In her 9th year in her term as the president of the Philippines from replacing the ousted president Joseph Ejercito Estrada and her re-election on 2004 let’s recall and run down details of her 8 State of the Nation Address as we prepare to listen on her last on the 27th of July.

2001 State of the Nation Address – July 23, 2001

2002 State of the Nation Address – July 22, 2009

“I know that it is to me that those many Filipinos are looking for the vindication of their decision to go to Edsa. I shall not disappoint them.

It is for them that I am working hard on that stone that will fit just above my father’s, adding security to social justice, and prosperity to the promise of social equality in which he believed so much.

Toward the achievement of this strong republic, i shall bring to bear the full weight of the Executive, and call upon local government officials, to add their own. This is our common struggle, it shall be our shared victory. “

2003 State of the Nation Address – July 28, 2003

2004 State of the Nation Address – July 26, 2004

“I ask Congress to pass a law on government re-engineering, with silver parachutes for redundant offices. Once we have proved to our people that we have done what we can within the present structure of government, we can move on to changing the system to one that enhances our freedom and flexibility to do more. I expect that next year, Congress will start considering the resolutions for charter change.”

2005 State of the Nation Address – July 25, 2005

“The system clearly needs fundamental change and the sooner the better. It’s time to start the great debate on charter change. We must address such questions as how much more government is needed for the greater safety and economic security of our people, and how much less government is more conducive to free enterprise and economic progress. The mode of Charter change is the exclusive prerogative of Congress. But a constituent assembly may well give our people the quickest reforms. I shall work with Congress, civil society groups and local government executives who are convinced that Charter changes are needed to enable the country to surmount the unprecedented challenges of the 21st century.”

2006 State of the Nation Address – July 24, 2006

“For those who want to pick up old fights, we’re game but what a waste of time. Why not join hands instead? Join hands in the biggest challenge of all, where we all win or we all lose: the battle for the survival and progress of our one and only country. After three years, eleven months, and six days, I shall relinquish the Presidency, with much if not all that I have outlined completed. I do not want it said then that, in the end, I defeated my enemies. I would rather have it said that all of us, you and I, friends and foes today, achieved together a country progressive, prosperous and united.”

2007 State of the Address – July 23, 2007

By then poverty shall have been marginalized; and the marginalized raised to a robust middle class. We will have achieved the hallmarks of a modern society, where institutions are strong. By 2010, the Philippines should be well on its way to achieving that vision.”

2008 State of the Nation Address – July 28, 2008

We are three branches but one government. We have our disagreements; we each have hopes, and ambitions that drive and divide us, be they personal, ethnic, religious and cultural. But we are one nation with one fate.”
