National Geographic Channel to premiere first locally-produced documentary- Asia’s Titanic

National Geographic Channels International (NGCI) has announced the premiere of “Asia’s Titanic,” a one-hour National Geographic Channel exclusive that probes into the world’s worst peacetime maritime disaster ever recorded.

This is the first documentary produced by NGCI in collaboration with a Filipino film production group under the NGCI-EDB (Economic Development Board) development fund grant.

“Asia’s Titanic” will premiere exclusively on NGC (Sky Cable Channel 41) on August 25, 2009, Tuesday, at 9 p.m. It will replay on August 26 at 4 am, 9 am, and 1 pm; August 30 at 9 pm; and August 31 at 1 am and 5 am.

“The documentary is a milestone for Filipino filmmakers to celebrate the launch of an exceptionally high quality movie to Filipino and global audiences with a strong admonition about sea safety,” said Jude Turcuato, NGC Philippines territory director.

“We are deeply committed to support the Filipino filmmaking industry with the unique opportunity of showcasing its creative talents to NGC viewers worldwide. The documentary is a powerful and dramatic story made by a Filipino production team that equals the hallmark standards of National Geographic,” Turcuato said.

“Asia’s Titanic” presents the tragic sinking of MV Doña Paz after colliding with an oil tanker off Mindoro Island just five days before Christmas in 1987— about 4,000 passengers died in the tragedy. The disaster is told through dramatic first-hand accounts of survivors and rescuers, actual transcripts from the Philippine congressional inquiry into the tragedy, archival footage and photos, and a re-enactment of the collision.

The documentary is directed by award-winning director Yam Laranas. It is the first for any Filipino filmmaker to direct a full-length documentary for National Geographic. Laranas said making the documentary was exciting. At the same time, he said it was heartbreaking to hear first-hand the horrifying accounts of the few survivors. He said the survivors themselves broke into tears while reliving their tragic ordeal.

In making “Asia’s Titanic”, Laranas and his team were guided by NGC’s supervising producers to meet the high standards of the channel’s documentary filmmaking—compelling storytelling, breathtaking and engaging visuals, and clear and crisp sound.

Last July 8 at the Fully Booked Bonifacio High Street Global City Taguig, Globe Telecom officially launches their partnership with Pelicola.tv Internet TV for an additional feature on Globe Telecom’s website and that is Kada Kwento Series. Globe Telecom is known to be as the leading mobile network providers that is close with the youth that offers unlitxt, bente pesos services, and other premium downloads and this time Globe Telecom launches an additional add ons to their site a mini series that is close to the interest of the youth especially to Barkadas. The project Kada Kwento is a project of Globe Telecom in parters of Pelicola.tv Internet TV a group of short film makers in the cyberspace.

Kada Kwento was launch last June 2009 and now it has 3 videos uploaded in Globe Telecom’s website. The first one is the full trailer of Kada Kwento, second is Transit that tells the story of Dani a woman likes to travel and loves adventure, and third one is Pick it tells the story of Pol and Penny, best buds that fights like cats and dogs but in the end of the day the settle things like others.

Kaya ng Pinoy launches the Balangay Expedition

I am proud that my country’s culture is rich! Being Filipino is like eating a halo halo, you don’t just go eating the ice or the beans, but you should enjoy all of what’s inside it, and that is the best metaphor of Filipino Culture. This morning (June 27, 2009) at the Cultural Center of the Philippines at the Harbor Area, Kaya ng Pinoy officially launches the start of Balangay Expedition which begins on 2010 at the Southeast Asia region, on 2011 it it goes to Mirconesia and Madagascar, and on 2012 it will navigate accros the Pacific and Atlantic and aorund the world and returns to the Philippines on 2013.

Art Valdez head of Kaya ng Pinoy Foundation along with the Mt. Everest Team: Leo Oracion, Erwin Emata, Noelle Wenceslao, Carina Dayondon, Janet Belarmino-Sardena, Dr. Ted Esguerra, Fred Jamilli, at Dr. Voltaire Velasco along with master sailors, academicians and scientists comprises the Balangay Expedition team. The Balangay was named as Diwata ng Lahi or Guardian of Race, as it was in the tradition that it will be a woman’s name to be use in naming a shipping vessel. Aside from educating the Filipinos with our culture, the expedition includes medical support, and others that is needed on the areas that the expedition team reaches.
